North Andover, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Connor Reagan made 24 saves, including 17 in the first half, as fifth-ranked Merrimack College upset the top-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team, 5-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The loss snaps Le Moyne's 59-game Northeast-10 Conference win streak and its 33-game regular season win streak. The Dolphins last suffered a defeat in conference action on March 31, 2007, a 7-6 setback at Merrimack, which came seven days after Le Moyne had its Division II-record 70-game NE-10 win streak ended by Bryant University. Over their last 133 conference games, the Dolphins are now 130-3. Today's loss also marks the first regular season setback since an 11-9 loss against Limestone College on March 6, 2011, which ended a 47-game regular season win streak dating back to the 2007 Merrimack contest.
Le Moyne, which scored its fewest goals since an 8-3 loss at Merrimack during the 1999 season, a span of 224 games, scored the only two goals in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) started the scoring with his 10th tally of the year at the 11:19 mark of the first quarter after a Merrimack turnover. Following a Merrimack unnecessary roughness penalty, the Dolphins doubled their lead with 3:37 remaining in the opening quarter as senior attackman Nate Frechette (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) netted his 15th goal of the campaign off a feed from junior midfielder Andrew Chadderdon (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn).
After a scoreless second quarter, during which Reagan made 10 saves as the Dolphins had a 14-8 advantage in shots, the Warriors took advantage of a Le Moyne penalty to get on the scoreboard in the opening 30 seconds of the third quarter. In an extra-man situation to start the third quarter after a Le Moyne slashing penalty to end the second quarter, preseason player of the year Corey Lunney found the back of the net at the 14:31 mark off a pass from reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year Greg Melaugh.
Following 12 minutes of scoreless play, during which Merrimack held an 8-2 shot advantage, Lunney tied the score at two apiece off a feed from Mike Perdie with 2:17 left in the quarter.
After Reagan recorded his 20th save of the game, the Warriors took the lead with a transition goal from Melaugh with 54 seconds remaining in the stanza off a long pass from defender Brandon Waiter.
Merrimack, which has defeated the Dolphins each of the last three times Le Moyne has been the top-ranked team in the nation (May 9, 2010 and May 6, 2011 were the others), took its first two-goal lead with 5:31 remaining in the game. After the Dolphins were whistled for pushing, Jamie Shand found the back of the net off a feed from Perdie.
The Dolphins answered back with an extra-man goal of their own with 3:54 to play. Sophomore midfielder Alec Westerhoff (Lagrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township/Bridgton Academy) scored his sixth goal of the year off a pass from senior attackman Tyler Prevost (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart/Onondaga C.C.) 31 seconds into a one-minute unnecessary roughness penalty.
The Warriors won the ensuing face-off and were able to push their lead back to two 40 seconds later as Brett Axelson scored off a pass from Melaugh.
Le Moyne won the ensuing face-off, but immediately turned the ball over to the Warriors. After Merrimack ran one and one-half minutes off the clock, Axelson committed a turnover and the Dolphins cleared the ball into their offensive end. However, Reagan made his 24th and final save to end the comeback bid.
Senior goalkeeper Jeff White (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius HS) made 10 saves in between the pipes in suffering his first career loss when allowing five or fewer goals (47-5 career record). Reagan earns his second career win against the Dolphins after earning the victory in Merrimack's 7-6 win in the NE-10 semifinals on May 6, 2011. Le Moyne finished the game with a 50-32 advantage in shots, but Merrimack had a 21-14 edge in the second half.
Le Moyne (7-1, 4-1 NE-10) looks to restart its NE-10 win streak on Saturday against Saint Anselm at 11:00 a.m.
