ADELPHI EDGES SOFTBALL IN BOTH GAMES OF NE-10 DOUBLEHEADER, 1-0, 3-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Garden City, N.Y. – Catchers Meghan Heiser and Elizabeth Lindner scored the winning runs in each game as Adelphi University swept the Le Moyne College softball team on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers won the opener, 1-0, and took the nightcap, 3-2.

In the opening game, Heiser blasted a solo home run to left center with two outs in the second inning for the only run of the game.

Junior lefty Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) was the tough-luck loser after yielding just one run and only three hits over six innings, while striking out eight batters. Devon Kelly earned the win after striking out six batters over seven innings, while allowing five hits.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first with a run on two hits in the third inning. Freshman second baseman Shelby Condon (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) drew a walk to open the frame and moved to second on a bunt single by freshman right fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield). After a single by sophomore catcher Kristie Capuano">Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) to load the bases and a strikeout, Harrison drew a walk to force in Condon.

Adelphi answered with two unearned runs on two hits and one Le Moyne error in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. With two outs, second baseman Heather Salerno reached second on an error. Third baseman Victoria Wink followed with a triple down the right field line to plate Salerno. First baseman Katie Andrews then singled to right field to knock in Wink.

Le Moyne evened the score at two apiece in the top of the seventh on one hit and an Adelphi error. After Reynolds led off with a single to left, she stole second and then raced home on an error by the catcher.

The Panthers took advantage of a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the seventh to plate the winning run. With one out, Lindner doubled to left center. After a strikeout, Lindner advanced to third on a single to third base by center fielder Emily Dorko and then scored the game-winning run on an error by the first baseman.

Harrison took the loss after giving up three unearned runs and eight hits over six and two-thirds innings, while striking out seven batters. Laurin Watts earned the win after striking out nine batters over seven innings, while giving up two runs and six hits.

Le Moyne (4-10, 2-3 NE-10, 2-3 SW) returns to action on Tuesday at American International College at 3:00 p.m.
