BASEBALL WINS PITCHERS' DUEL AT NEW HAVEN, 2-0

West Haven, Conn. – Senior righty Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) struck out a career-high 13 batters and graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drove in the game-winning run as the Le Moyne College baseball team defeated the University of New Haven, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Frank Vieira Field.

Carroll and New Haven starter Henry Hirsch traded scoreless innings over the first seven frames of the game. Each pitcher allowed just one base runner to reach third base during his time on the mound.

In the ninth inning, an inning after Hirsch departed the game, the Dolphins struck for two runs on two hits and a New Haven error. Senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) led off with a double to left center and then advanced to third as senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) reached on a bunt. After New Haven changed pitchers, O'Connor raced home for the winning run as Mahoney reached on an error by the new New Haven pitcher on a suicide squeeze. Following a pair of outs, graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) singled to right field to drive in Mahoney, who returned to the lineup after missing the last four weeks.

Carroll improved to 2-1 on the season after tossing a career-high eight scoreless innings, while allowing just two hits and striking out 13 batters. Sophomore Conor Nolan (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) tossed a three-up, three-down ninth inning to close out the victory. Joey Royer took the loss for the Chargers after giving up two runs (one earned) over one-plus innings on the mound. Hirsch exited the game after striking out eight batters over seven innings, while allowing only five hits.

Le Moyne (11-17, 5-7 NE-10, 3-3 SW), which has had its last 13 games decided by one or two runs (5-8), remains at New Haven for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:00 p.m.
