Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore southpaw Jon Dunn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) tossed a complete-game five-hitter and graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drove in three runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 7-0 win over The College of Saint Rose on Thursday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the game with two runs on one hit in the top of the first inning. Junior center fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) was hit by the third pitch of the game and then took second on a single to left field by graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School). After a double-steal by Wiese and Ciraco, Wiese raced home on a wild pitch. Mahoney then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Ciraco.
Le Moyne added two runs on two hits and a Saint Rose error in the third inning. Ciraco drew a walk on five pitches with one out and then stole second base. Mahoney followed with a single to left field to knock in Ciraco for the second time. After Mahoney stole second, senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) singled back to the pitcher and took second on a throwing error by the pitcher, which allowed Mahoney to score.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 5-0 in the fourth on one hit. Senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) walked on five pitches with one out and came around to score on a double to left center by graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College).
Le Moyne completed its scoring with two runs on three hits and a Saint Rose error in the eighth inning. Redmond drew a walk to open the frame and came around to score on an error by the center fielder as Wiese singled to center. After a fly out, Mahoney singled to center to drive in Wiese.
Dunn, making just his second start since March 4th, registered his first career shutout by striking out five batters and yielding just five hits, but faced just two batters over the minimum due to two double plays and a caught stealing. In addition to Mahoney's two hits, senior third baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) had three hits. Kyle Charron took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits over five innings.
Le Moyne (14-19) returns to action on Saturday for the start of its first home weekend series of the year. First pitch against Southern Connecticut State is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
