Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior righty Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) tossed seven scoreless innings in the opener and sophomore southpaw Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) threw his second straight shutout in the nightcap as the Le Moyne College baseball team swept Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 6-0, and posted an 8-0 win in the nightcap.
Le Moyne scored three times on one hit and a Southern Connecticut State error in the first inning of game one. Junior center fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), junior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drew consecutive walks to load the bases to start the frame. Senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Wiese and move Reynolds to third. After Mahoney stole second, senior third baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) singled though the right side to drive in Reynolds, while Mahoney raced home on a fielding error by the right fielder.
The Dolphins added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) drew a walk to open the frame and then took second on a single to center by senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley). After a sacrifice bunt by graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College), Wiese singled up the middle to drive in Speicher and Stinson and force a Southern Connecticut State pitching change. Following a walk and a strikeout, O'Connor singled to left field to knock in Wiese.
Carroll picked up his second straight win after striking out eight batters over seven scoreless innings, while yielding just four hits. Wiese finished the game with three hits and three stolen bases, while Stinson had two hits. Ryan Yerina took the loss after giving up six runs on six hits over three and one-third innings pitched. In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored four times on four hits in the first inning. Wiese led off with a single up the middle and Reynolds followed by drawing a walk. Mahoney then singled to left field to drive in Wiese and push Reynolds to third. O'Connor followed with a single to center to plate Reynolds and Mahoney. After a fly out, freshman catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) singled up the middle to knock in O'Connor.
Le Moyne tacked on two runs on three hits and a Southern Connecticut State error in the fifth inning. Speicher led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on sac bunt by Redmond. After Wiese reached on an infield single to the shortstop, he stole second base, while Speicher raced home as the catcher's throw landed in center field. Following a groundout, Mahoney singled up the middle to drive in Wiese.
The Dolphins finished off their scoring for the day with two runs on four Southern Connecticut State errors in the sixth inning. Wiley reached second on a throwing error by the pitcher to open the frame and then took third as West reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Freshman designated hitter Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) then grounded out to the third baseman to drive in Wiley. After pinch-runner Stinson advanced to third on a foul out, he scored as Redmond reached second on a pair of errors by the shortstop.
