Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) singled home the game-winning run in the opener and junior southpaw Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) tossed a six-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Le Moyne College softball team swept Pace University in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 2-1, in eight innings, while taking game two, 5-0.
Le Moyne opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning on a lead-off home run to left center by senior third baseman Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson).
After not having a base-runner over the first six innings, the Setters tied the score in the top of the seventh inning on one hit. Catcher Hana Wright drew a lead-off walk to end Harrison's perfect game and was replaced at first base by pinch-runner Tori Alegria. Following a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Rachael McMahon, shortstop Jeane Drury broke up Harrison's no-hitter with a bunt single down the third base line and raced to second base after it was left unoccupied. First baseman Natalie Gellos then lifted a sacrifice fly into foul territory down the right field line to drive in Alegria.
The Dolphins walked off with the win with a run on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a single to center by freshman shortstop Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont). After Kiernan was intentionally walked to load the bases, Capuano singled down the left field line to drive in Cawley.
Harrison earned her 15th victory of the year after striking out a career high-tying 15 batters over the eight innings, while yielding one run on two hits and one walk. Kiernan finished the game with three hits, while Cawley added a pair. Chelsea Shea suffered the loss for the Setters after allowing two runs on eight hits over seven-plus innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need on one hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Harrison drew a walk on six pitches and then took second on a single up the middle by freshman designated player Mackenzie Dreher (Hinckley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit). After sophomore right fielder Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) walked to load the bases, freshman left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) was hit by a pitch to force in junior pinch-runner Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool).
Le Moyne added three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Cawley walked, Trotta reached on a bunt single and Kiernan walked to load the bases to open the frame, junior pinch-runner Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland) raced home on a wild pitch. Capuano followed with a single to center field to drive in Trotta. Harrison then reached on a fielder's choice to knock in Kiernan.
The Dolphins completed the day's scoring with a run on two hits in the sixth inning. After Reynolds led off with a double to center field, Cawley singled up the middle with one out to plate Reynolds.
Harrison registered six strikeouts, while scattering six hits, to pick up her 16th win of the season, the third-best total in the Northeast-10. Cawley recorded two hits for the third straight game, while Trotta also had two hits to extend her hitting streak to 15 games. Kelly Fisher took the loss for the Setters after allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings.
Le Moyne (19-20, 14-10 NE-10, 10-10 SW), which clinched the fourth and final Southwest Division spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, closes out the regular season on Sunday against Pace with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
