Pleasantville, N.Y. – Left fielder/first baseman Brandon Martineson went 5-for-8 with four runs batted in and two runs scored to lead Pace University to a sweep of the Le Moyne College baseball team in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Finnerty Field. The Setters took the opener, 11-4, and posted a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Le Moyne started the scoring in the opener with a run in the first inning without getting a hit. Junior center fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) was hit by a pitch to open the game and took second on a one-out wild pitch. After graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) walked to load the bases, Wiese raced home on a wild pitch.
Pace broke through with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. After right fielder Charlie Galasso and designated hitter James Pjura drew consecutive walks with one out, Martineson singled to left to load the bases. First baseman Ian Wukitsch then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Galasso. Following a single to right field by catcher Joe Solomeno that knocked in Pjura, second baseman Jon Kovel singled up the middle to plate Martineson.
The Dolphins evened the score at three apiece with two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Senior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled to third base with one out and came around to score on a triple to center by Wiese. Graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) then singled to the left side of the infield to drive in Wiese.
The Setters regained the lead with two runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the sixth inning. Solomeno reached on a throwing error by the third baseman to open the frame and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Kovel. After a groundout, a single by third baseman Chris Gili and a walk by center fielder Michael Viegas to load the bases, Galasso singled up the middle to drive in Solomeno and Gili.
Le Moyne pulled within 5-4 with a run without a hit in the seventh inning. Stinson drew a walk to open the frame, took second on a wild pitch and then moved to third on a groundout. Wiese followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Stinson.
Pace blew the game open with six runs on four hits and four Le Moyne errors in the seventh inning. The Setters loaded the bases as Martineson and Solomeno reached on errors around an infield single by Wukitsch. Kovel then reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, which allowed Martineson to score. Shortstop Robert Horn then reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, which allowed Wukitsch to score Pace's seventh run. After a line out, Viegas singled to the shortstop to drive in Solomeno and Kovel. Following another single to the shortstop to load the bases again, Horn scored on a wild pitch. After Viegas was thrown out at home as Pjura reached on a fielder's choice, Martineson singled to left field to knock in Galasso with the final run of the game.
Senior righty Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) suffered his second loss of the year after allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits and five walks over six innings. Wiese and Ciraco each had two of Le Moyne's six hits. Neil Pezzullo earned the win for the Setters after yielding four runs on four hits over six innings, while striking out seven batters. Josh Grant earned a save after tossing three scoreless innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored once in the first inning on one hit and a Pace error. Wiese led off the game with a single to right field and then stole second with one out. After moving to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt, Wiese scored as Mahoney was thrown out trying to steal second base.
The Setters evened the score in the bottom of the inning on two hits. Gili opened the frame with a single to right field and then took second on a sac bunt. Two batters later, Martineson singled to third base to drive in Gili.
Pace took the lead in the third inning with two runs on two hits. After Gili walked and Horn singled to left field with one out, Martineson singled to third base with two outs to knock in Gili and Horn.
Le Moyne cut its deficit in half with a run on two hits in the sixth inning. After Ciraco walked with one out, freshman first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled to left field with two outs to plate Ciraco.
The Dolphins tied the score at three apiece in the seventh inning on two hits. After freshman third baseman Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) doubled with one out, junior right fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) singled to center field to drive in Swetman.
Pace regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh on one hit. Viegas singled back to the pitcher to start the inning, took second on a sac bunt, moved to third on a groundout and then raced home on a wild pitch.
Sophomore lefty Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), the Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week the last two weeks, had his three-game win streak snapped as he gave up four runs on six hits over eight innings, while striking out four. Wiese and Wright each had two of Le Moyne's seven hits. Nick Sammartano earned the win after retiring the only two batters he faced out of the bullpen. Edward Byrne picked up his fifth save by tossing two hitless innings.
Le Moyne (18-22, 11-11 NE-10, 9-7 SW), which dipped to third in the Southwest Division standings, three games behind first-place Pace with five games left, completes its three-game series at Pace on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
