Box Score Colchester, Vt. – Juniors Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) and Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) combined for 43 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 78-52 win over Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Ross Sports Center.
Marple tied her career high by scoring 22 points, 12 of which came in the first half. She previously had 22 earlier this season at Saint Rose on November 23. She also tied a career-best with six assists, while grabbing five rebounds (four offensive) and posting two steals. Greer tallied a career-high 21 points, 12 of which were in the second half. Her previous career high of 18 came against St. Thomas Aquinas on December 30, 2012 and at Roberts Wesleyan on November 9, 2013. She also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Graduate student guard Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) tied Greer for the most rebounds in the game, a career-high nine, while dishing out eight assists, scoring five points and recording two steals.
Cara Deroy led the Purple Knights with 13 points, including 11 after halftime, and six steals. Indira Evora posted 10 points, eight of which came in the second half.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first 16 points over the opening 4:32. Sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) had six of the points, Marple had five, Greer hit a three-pointer and Stroman made a jump shot.
Saint Michael's (3-9, 2-6 NE-10) responded with 15 of the next 22 points over a stretch of 5:22 to cut its deficit in half. Kelly Frappier led the charge with seven points, while Alexa Long had four and Deroy and Megan Gaudreau had two apiece. Junior forward Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) had four of Le Moyne's points, while Greer added a three-pointer.
After Long hit a jumper with 9:43 left in the half to pull the Purple Knights within 23-15, the Dolphins held Saint Michael's without a field goal the rest of the half and closed out the stanza with 20 of the last 22 points. Marple, who finished with at least 21 points for the fourth time this season (all of which have been a Saturday), led the push with seven points. Classmate Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) posted five points, Greer and senior guard Ashley Prischak (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) tallied three points and senior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) made a jumper.
Following baskets by Gaudreau and Evora to start the second half, the Dolphins scored 10 straight points for their first 30-point lead of the game. Marple and Stroman each had three of the points, while Greer and McKnight each had two.
After the teams traded points over the next 5:42, resulting in a 60-30 Le Moyne advantage with 9:46 left, the Dolphins scored eight straight points for their largest lead of the game, 38 points, with 8:10 to play. Greer hit back-to-back three-pointers from the left corner before Marple finished off an interior pass from classmate Maddie Hahesy">Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell).
The Purple Knights answered with 14 of the next 16 points to trim their deficit to 26 with 2:51 remaining. Deroy had nine of the points in the spurt, while Maggie Sabine registered the other three.
Each team scored eight points in the final two and one-half minutes to deliver the final score. Four players combined for Le Moyne's eight points, while Evora had six of the eight points for the Purple Knights.
Le Moyne (9-5, 5-3 NE-10), which posted its largest margin of victory since a 61-33 win over Felician on December 21, 2007 and its largest against a conference opponent since an 85-59 win over Merrimack on January 27, 2007 (a span of 148 conference games), travels to Assumption College on Tuesday to face the Greyhounds at 5:30 p.m.
