Flushing, N.Y. – Graduate student center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) scored 20 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 75-56 victory over Queens College on Thursday night in non-conference action at Fitzgerald Gym.
Janson, who tallied 12 of his points in the second half, made nine of his 10 field goal attempts. He also added five rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Senior guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) registered 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers on four attempts, dished out five assists for the third straight game and posted three steals. Junior guard Naté Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie/Quinnipiac) and freshman forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) came off the bench to score 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Gause had three rebounds, three steals and three blocks and Buczek had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Patrick Modzelewski led the Knights with 17 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Amir Tarif registered 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
After the teams split the game's first 12 points over the opening 4:44, the Dolphins scored 10 of the next 13 points to open up a 16-9 lead. Champion started the run with a three-pointer, Janson dunked the ball off a feed from Champion, Gause drilled a three-pointer from the left corner and then Buczek made two free throws with 12:22 left.
Following a Modzelewski lay-up, the Dolphins ran off 10 more points around a Queens free throw to extend their lead to 14 points. Mahoney buried a three-pointer, Buczek recorded a conventional three-point play and then Gause had a fast-break lay-up and a slashing dunk with 6:59 remaining.
Queens closed out the half with 12 of the last 20 points to pull within 34-24 at the intermission. Modzelewski and Tarif each had four of the points, while Ronald Washington made a corner jump shot with two seconds left for the final points.
After the teams each scored 10 points over the opening 5:26 of the second half, the Dolphins gradually pulled away from the Knights. Gause made a jump shot in transition and followed with a free throw 23 seconds later and then Champion made a pair of free throws as the Dolphins took their first 15-point lead with 12:50 to play.
Following six and one-half minutes of action in which Le Moyne's lead bounced between 13 and 16 points, the Dolphins posted a 12-3 run over the next 4:51 to establish their largest lead of the game at 75-53. Buczek had a three-pointer and a jumper, Janson had two lay-ups and a free throw and freshman guard Panagiotis Zaraidonis (Athens, Greece/1st High School of Ilioupolis) capped the scoring with his first two career free throws with 1:16 left.
Queens got a free throw from Enees Nikovic and a lay-up from Dejuhan Gray to end the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (6-5), which defeated Queens for the third time in four games over the last five seasons, returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday at Adelphi University at 3:30 p.m.
