Box Score Easton, Mass. – Tori Faieta scored 18 points to lead Stonehill College to a 65-61 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Merkert Gymnasium.
Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) led the Dolphins in the setback with 18 points, while grabbing five rebounds before fouling out with 30 seconds left. Graduate student guard Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) and junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) each registered 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Stroman dished out three assists.
Faieta tallied nine of her points in each half, while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds and blocking two shots. Amy Pelletier recorded 15 points and dished out five assists, while Mary Louise Dixon posted 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
After Faieta and Pelletier nailed three-pointers to five the Skyhawks a 10-5 lead at the 16:30 mark of the opening half, the Dolphins rattled off seven consecutive points for their biggest lead of the game with 14:25 left. Marple started the push with a three-pointer and Greer followed with a pair of lay-ups.
Stonehill, which is receiving votes in the latest top-25 poll, recorded a 9-2 run over the next 2:42 to take its first five-point edge of the game. Asia Ewing made a three-pointer, Pelletier hit a jumper, Faieta converted a lay-up and then Paige Marshall made a lay-up.
The Dolphins countered with seven straight points to regain the lead, their last of the contest. Stroman opened the run with a three-pointer and then Marple made back-to-back lay-ups, the second of which came with 8:37 left.
The Skyhawks responded with 10 consecutive points for their largest lead of the half with 4:41 to play. Five different Skyhawks scored two points each in the stretch.
After the Dolphins tallied seven straight points to get within one point with 1:21 left in the stanza, the Skyhawks scored the last four to take a 33-28 lead at halftime. In Le Moyne's run, Marple made a three-pointer and then Greer converted a lay-up and two foul shots. For Stonehill, Ewing made a free throw and Dixon ended the half's scoring with a three-pointer.
Following a lay-up by Faieta to open the second half's scoring, the Dolphins recorded eight of the next 10 points to close within one point with 16:30 left. Marple started the stretch with a jumper and a free throw, sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) followed with a jumper and then senior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) nailed a three-pointer.
After alternating lay-ups by Faieta and Greer, the Skyhawks posted a 9-1 run to push their lead to nine with 11:39 left. Pelletier made a jumper, Ewing and Dixon converted lay-ups and then Pelletier drilled a three-pointer.
Following a 7-2 run by the Dolphins to get within two, Stonehill netted seven straight points for the largest lead of the game. In Le Moyne's spurt, junior forward Tessa Pucello">Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) and Stroman buried three-pointers around a free throw by Marple. In Stonehill's run, Pelletier made a three-pointer, Faieta had a lay-up and then Dixon made a lay-up to force a Le Moyne timeout with 3:43 left.
The Dolphins responded with 15 of the next 20 points to close within one point with 45 seconds left. Greer started the comeback with a three-pointer and Brown (1) and Marple (2) combined to make three free throws after Marshall made a foul shot.
After the Skyhawks took a 62-54 lead with 1:38 left on a Faieta lay-up and two Marshall free throws around two Marple foul shots, the Dolphins scored seven straight points. Stroman opened the spurt by making a lay-up with 1:31 to go. Following a Dixon miss, Stroman recorded a conventional three-point play with 1:14 left to make the score 62-59. Just five seconds later, Stroman picked off a pass by Faieta and the Dolphins called timeout with 53 seconds left. Off a missed three-pointer, Pucello grabbed the rebound and converted a lay-up with 45 seconds left. Dixon drew Marple's fifth foul with 30 seconds to go and made the ensuing two foul shots. After calling timeout with 27 seconds remaining, the Dolphins got off a three-pointer with 12 seconds left, but Marshall got a piece of it and Faieta snatched it out of the air before getting fouled. Faieta delivered the game's final score by making the second of two free-throw attempts.
Le Moyne (10-9, 6-7 NE-10), which has dropped four games by a combined nine points over its last five contests, completes cross-divisional play on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against Franklin Pierce University.
