Syracuse, N.Y. – Three players scored in double figures to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 62-44 win over the University of New Haven on Wednesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Senior guard
Nate Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie/Quinnipiac) scored 20 points, 15 of which came in the second half, to lead the Dolphins offensively, while grabbing seven rebounds. Junior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) recorded 18 points, including 10 after halftime, and dished out three assists, while classmate
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) tallied 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds to lead the Dolphins.
Cyrus James led the Chargers with 13 points, while grabbing eight rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Jemal Mosley added 10 points as the only other player in double figures. Eric Anderson, the top post player in the Northeast-10, grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds, but was held scoreless on 0-of-6 shooting.
The two teams traded points over the opening 10 minutes of the contest, resulting in a 15-14 Le Moyne advantage. Five different Dolphins scored in the span, led by six points from Lovell, while four Chargers scored, led by six points from Mosley.
The Dolphins responded with seven straight points to open up an eight-point lead. Lovell made a lay-up, Mahoney followed with a basket and then Gause buried a three-pointer.
New Haven countered with nine consecutive points to regain the lead. Tommy Hunt accounted for all nine points in the streak with a trio of three-pointers from different spots around the arc.
Mahoney tallied four points in a span of 32 seconds to give the Dolphins a 26-23 lead at the intermission.
After Gause made the first basket of the second half, the Chargers tallied the next seven points to take their only lead of the final half. Samir McDaniels made consecutive lay-ups, Mosley converted a free throw to tie the score and then James gave his team the lead with a lay-up off an offensive rebound.
Le Moyne answered back with an 11-2 run to take the lead for good with 14:21 left. Gause had five of the points, including a dunk off an alley-oop by Lovell to cap the streak, while Lovell, Mahoney and Buczek each posted two points.
Following back-and-forth play over the next two minutes, the Dolphins ran off 15 of the next 16 points over a stretch of seven minutes to put the game away. Gause netted six of the points to lead the charge, while Lovell added four.
Lovell made four free throws around six points by the Chargers to close out the game.
Le Moyne (3-0, 1-0 NE-10), which has won its first three games for the first time since the 2009-10 season, returns to action on Saturday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m. The contest will determine the 10th point of the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions, which Le Moyne currently leads 4-3.
