NEW HAVEN HOLDS OFF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, 65-62, IN NE-10 OPENER

Syracuse, N.Y. – Aquillin Hayes nearly recorded a triple-double to lead the University of New Haven to a 65-62 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Wednesday night in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Ted Grant Court.

Senior guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the Dolphins with a career-high 12 points, while grabbing a career best-tying seven rebounds for the second straight game. Senior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) tallied 12 points, pulled down eight rebounds and posted a pair of steals. Senior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) was the third Dolphins in double figures with 11 points in just 18 foul-plagued minutes. Junior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) came off the bench to corral a team-best 10 rebounds, while adding eight points.

Hayes led all players in the game with 24 points, while grabbing 16 rebounds, including 11 in the first half, and blocking seven shots. Lauren Hebert came off the bench to tally 12 points for the Chargers, while pulling down seven rebounds.

After the Dolphins scored the first four points of the contest, the Chargers tallied nine straight points. Ashley LeBlanc scored the first four points, Hebert followed with a three-pointer and then Hayes made a lay-up.

Le Moyne answered with a 9-4 run to knot the game at 13 with 7:28 left in the opening half. After lay-ups from Greer, Hahesy and senior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay), junior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wisc./Sheboygan North) nailed a three-pointer to tie the game.

New Haven responded with 15 of the next 16 to take a 28-14 lead with 3:35 left. Sade King led the run with seven points, while Hayes had six and Hebert made a jump shot.

The Dolphins closed out the half with an 8-2 run over the last 2:29 to pull within 30-22 at halftime. Four different players scored in the stretch, capped by a lay-up by freshman guard Austin Stevens (Adams Center, N.Y./South Jefferson) with one second left.

After the Chargers stretched their lead to 11 on a pair of occasions over the opening five minutes of the second half, the last of which came at 41-30, the Dolphins scored six straight points to pull within five with just under 13 minutes left. Hahesy had four of the points around a lay-up by Marple.

Following a 6-3 push by New Haven to take a 47-39 lead with 9:50 remaining, Le Moyne rattled off 10 straight points over a span of 90 seconds to take their first lead since the opening minutes of the game. Greer started the comeback with a three-pointer, Salzbrenner followed with another from the right corner, Brown made a pair of free throws to tie the score and then she converted a put-back lay-up for the lead with 7:29 to go.

The teams then traded points over the next six and one-half minutes, resulting in a 57-56 New Haven edge with 2:47 to play. Hayes scored eight of New Haven's 10 points in the stretch, while Marple tallied six of Le Moyne's seven.

Following a Marple free throw to get the Dolphins within one, Hebert drained a three-pointer from the right wing and drew Hahesy's fifth foul with 2:29 to go. Hebert completed the four-point play by making the free throw for a 61-56 advantage. The Chargers extended their lead to six on another Hebert free throw with 1:33 to play.

The teams then traded free throws over the next 1:26 before Greer nailed a three-pointer from the right wing as time expired to deliver the final margin.

Le Moyne (2-1, 0-1 NE-10), which suffered their first loss of the season to New Haven for the second straight year, returns to the hardwood on Saturday against The College of Saint Rose at 1:00 p.m. The contest will determine the 10th point of the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions, which Le Moyne currently leads 4-3.
