MARPLE NETS CAREER HIGH IN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL’S 74-64 WIN OVER SAINT ROSE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) scored a career-best 25 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 74-64 win over The College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

With the victory, the Dolphins earn one-half of a point in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions. Through 11 contests, the fourth installment of the series is tied, 5-5.

Marple, whose previous career-best of 24 came in a 63-60 loss to Merrimack on January 18, 2014, tallied 16 of her points in the second half on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. She drained a career-high four three-pointers (on just five attempts), while dishing out three assists and grabbing three rebounds. Junior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) filled the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds (four offensive), a team-high five assists, three steals and one block. The Dolphins were an unprecedented 13-for-14 from the field in the second half (92.9-percent), including a 5-for-5 performance from beyond the three-point arc, as part of a 61.9-percent (26-42) shooting day, the best by the program in over 13 seasons.

Staci Barrett led the Golden Knights with 22 points, 12 of which she scored in the first half, on 11-of-15 shooting. Jamie Hutcheson recorded 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds, while Gabie Polce tallied 13 points.

The Dolphins, who have won the November meeting against the Golden Knights each of the last three years, opened the game with the first five points and tallied 19 of the first 26 points over the opening six minutes of play. Greer started the scoring with a three-pointer off an offensive rebound by Andrade and later added a lay-up, while Andrade capped the streak with back-to-back lay-ups to force Saint Rose's second timeout of the opening minutes.

Out of the timeout, Barrett made a lay-up off a feed from Nicole Bini, who followed with a three-pointer on the next trip down the court to pull the Golden Knights within seven with 13:12 left.

After the Dolphins pushed their lead back to 10 on a lay-up by Marple with 10:33 remaining, Saint Rose rattled off 19 of the next 23 points over a stretch of eight minutes to take a 33-28 lead. Polce led the charge with nine points, Barrett scored six and Keyontae Williams tallied four points.

Senior guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drained a three-pointer with 1:10 left in the stanza to pull the Dolphins within two at halftime.

Following a pair of baskets by Hutcheson to start the scoring in the second half and give the Golden Knights a game-high six-point lead, the Dolphins scored seven straight points and 23 of the next 28 to retake a 12-point advantage. Hahesy sparked the run with a three-pointer, Marple tallied 10 of the points and senior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) drilled a pair of three-pointers.

Saint Rose countered with a 14-6 run over the next five and one-half minutes to get within four, but could not get any closer. Barrett accounted for eight of the points in the stretch, while three other players each made a basket.

Following a three-pointer by Hutcheson with 3:43 left that made the score 63-59, the Dolphins made seven free throws and got a pair of lay-ups from Marple around five more points by Hutcheson to close out the victory.

Le Moyne (3-1, 1-1 NE-10), which has won three of its first four games for the second straight year, dips back into non-conference action on Tuesday at Mansfield University at 5:30 p.m.
