MEN'S BASKETBALL UPENDED BY MANSFIELD IN FINAL SECONDS, 63-60

Mansfield, Pa. - Andreas Katopodis nailed a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to give Mansfield University a 63-60 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Decker Gymnasium.

Junior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led the Dolphins offensively in the loss with 22 points, 15 of which he scored in the second half, while adding five steals. Senior guard Nate Gause (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie/Quinnipiac) recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Joe Bell, the fourth all-time leading scorer at Mansfield, led all scorers with 23 points, including 16 after halftime, while pulling down six rebounds. Charles Pemberton recorded 15 points (nine in the second half) and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Katopodis finished the game with eight points, while Thomas Moore had six points and dished out six assists.

After the Dolphins regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Lovell with 3:29 remaining, Moore gave the lead back to Mansfield with a three-pointer with 3:19 to play. Following a free throw by Ralik Wise that gave the Mountaineers a 57-55 edge with 1:05 left, he missed on his second attempt, but Bell grabbed the loose ball and laid it in for a four-point advantage. Pemberton then made a foul shot with 29 seconds left for a 60-55 lead.

Lovell then drew a foul and converted both foul shots with 22 seconds left. On the ensuing in-bounds attempt, the Mountaineers threw the ball away to give possession back to the Dolphins. As he attempted to loft a three-pointer to potentially tie the game, Gause was fouled. He knocked down all three free throws to even the game with 17 seconds remaining.

After calling timeout with 12 seconds left, the Mountaineers got the ball to Katopodis on the right wing. Following a pump fake and a dribble to his right, he buried the game-winning three-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining. After Le Moyne called its last two timeouts, Gause's three-point attempt at the buzzer was short.

The teams opened the game with back-and-forth play over the first four minutes, resulting in a 6-5 Le Moyne lead. The Dolphins then scored seven straight points and 14 of the next 18 to open up an 11-point lead with 7:51 left in the half. Mahoney had a pair of three-pointers and a free throw to lead the Dolphins in the run.

Mansfield answered back with a 14-8 run to cut its deficit to five with 3:43 left. Bell had five of the points, Pemberton scored four, Moore nailed a three-pointer and Katopodis made a fast-break lay-up off a steal.

The Dolphins got baskets from senior forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy), sophomore forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) and freshman guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) to push their lead back to 11 before Kamil Parzych made a three-pointer with 29 seconds left to pull the Mountaineers within 34-26 at halftime.

Le Moyne increased its lead to nine points on two occasions in the first minute of the second half before Mansfield rattled off a 19-4 run to take its largest lead of the game with 11:13 remaining. Bell led the charge with 10 of the points, including the go-ahead basket and a fast-break dunk for the six-point lead, while Pemberton scored four points, Katopodis drained a three-pointer and Wise made two foul shots to start the run.

The teams then traded points over the next six minutes before Romich made a lay-up and Lovell hit two free throws leading to Lovell's two go-ahead free throws with 3:29 remaining.

Le Moyne (4-1), which had won the previous four meetings with the Mountaineers, continues non-conference play on Friday at Gannon University at 7:30 p.m. for the first day of the Gary Miller Classic.
