WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF FOR 66-50 WIN OVER ROBERTS WESLEYAN

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) scored 14 points in the second half to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 66-50 win over Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Pucello, who tallied a career-high 23 points in a win at Mansfield on Tuesday, finished the contest 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 23 minutes off the bench, while pulling down five rebounds. Three other Dolphins each scored 12 points. Senior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) tallied seven of her 12 in the first half and dished out three assists. Junior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) also scored seven of her 12 in the opening half, while pulling down seven rebounds. Freshman guard Austin Stevens (Adams Center, N.Y./South Jefferson) tallied seven of her career-best 12 after halftime, while grabbing a season-high five rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

Marissa Sell, who also serves as the goalkeeper for Roberts Wesleyan's women's soccer team, came off the bench to lead the Redhawks with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds, while adding three steals. Samantha Courtney added nine points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in the setback.

The teams went back-and-forth in the opening, with the score changing sides five times and being tied on our occasions. After the Redhawks scored four of the first six points, Andrade nailed a three-pointer from the left side and a jumper from the left baseline to give the Dolphins a 7-4 edge with 16:16 left.

Following ties at 11 and 13, Roberts Wesleyan scored six straight points for its largest lead of the game. Sell made a jumper to start the run, Courtney followed with a lay-up and then Sell made a fast-break lay-up with 8:04 remaining in the half.

The Dolphins responded with a 10-2 run over a span of 4:03 to regain the lead. Stevens ignited the streak with a lay-up, Pucello followed with a three-pointer, Marple converted a foul shot and then made consecutive lay-ups for a 23-21 edge with 3:00 to go.

After Sell knotted the score at 23 with a lay-up with 1:12 left, Stevens took a pass from Marple and buried a three-pointer from the right wing as the half ended to give the Dolphins a 26-23 advantage at the intermission.

Following a basket by Courtney to start the scoring in the second half, the Dolphins rattled off 10 of the next 12 points over a stretch of 4:52 to take a nine-point lead. Marple had two free throws and a three-pointer in the span, while Pucello made a jumper in the paint and capped the stretch with a pair of free throws with 13:05 to play.

Roberts Wesleyan used a 5-2 spurt to get within six with just under 10 minutes left, but Pucello answered with a jumper and a three-pointer to give the Dolphins their first double-digit lead of the game with 8:06 left.

After Sell made a pair of foul shots with 5:09 left to pull the Redhawks within 48-40, the Dolphins scored 10 of the next 14 points to put the game away. Stevens had the first five points on a three-pointer and a fast-break lay-up, Pucello followed with a lay-up and then fed senior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) for a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key for a 58-44 advantage with 1:55 remaining.

Following a three-point play by Sell with 32 seconds left for Roberts Wesleyan's final points, the Dolphins scored five points and grabbed three offensive rebounds on one possession to close out the game's scoring. Andrade made two free throws in the span, junior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) made one and then Stevens ended the scoring with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left.

Le Moyne (5-1), which is off to a 5-1 start for the second straight year and for just the sixth time in the program's 39-year history, returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at American International College at 5:30 p.m.
