LATE RALLY NOT ENOUGH AS MEN’S SOCCER IS EDGED BY ADELPHI, 2-1, IN FIRST ROUND OF NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Garden City, N.Y. – Adelphi University scored twice in the opening 19 minutes and held on for a 2-1 win over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team on Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Motamed Field.

Le Moyne, which was knocked out of the tournament by the Panthers for the second straight year, drops to 12-6 on the season and now awaits word on a potential NCAA Championships bid. The Dolphins were ranked sixth in last week's NCAA East Region rankings, but have dropped back-to-back games since then. The Panthers, who were not in last week's rankings, improve to 12-5-1 and advance to the NE-10 semifinals, where they will face second-seeded Southern Connecticut State on Friday.

Adelphi struck for the game's first goal just under six minutes into the contest. Diego Zuniga carried the ball up the field before sending a pass towards the right side of the field to Federico De Oliveira, who fed the ball back into the middle of the field. Shane McLaughlin outran his defender to the ball and slipped a shot to the right of the goalkeeper and into the lower left corner of the net.

The Panthers netted the eventual game-winning goal just under 13 minutes later. Off a cross from the left side by John Sabal, Juan Aguiar, who gave the Panthers the third seed in the tournament by scoring three goals in a 3-2 upset at Merrimack on Friday night, out jumped his defender six yards out from the endline and was able to sneak a header inside the near right post for his eighth marker of the campaign.

Adelphi recorded a 4-2 edge in shots over the final 24 minutes of the half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

The Dolphins turned up their offensive intensity in the second half, but it was the Panthers who put all four of their shot attempts on goal over the first 32 minutes, all of which were saved by freshman goalkeeper Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute).

Following a high shot by the Panthers in the 81s minute, the Dolphins cut their deficit in half 60 seconds later. Off a scramble in front of the net, senior midfielder Zachary MacNabb (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/UNC Pembroke) had a shot from the top of the goal box deflected wide of the net, but graduate student forward Fabian Egger (Planegg, Bavaria/Feodor-Lynen Gymnasium/Webber International (Fla.)) was able to get behind goalkeeper Ahmad Salamah and knock the rebound into the goal from two yards out for his 10th goal of the year and fifth in the last three games. Egger is the 16th Dolphin in the 47-year history of the program to notch double-digit goals in a season and the first to do it in their first year in the program since Lee Williams netted 10 in 1995.

The Dolphins were unable to get off another shot in a bid to knot the game at two.

Beaury finished the game with six saves, five of which he had to make in the second half. Salamah registered a save in each half to earn the win between the pipes. Adelphi registered a 14-10 advantage in shots, while doubling up the Dolphins in corner kicks, 8-4.
