Garden City, N.Y. – Taylor Groth scored midway through the second half to give third-seeded Adelphi University a 1-0 win over the sixth-seeded Le Moyne College women's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Motamed Field.
The Dolphins, who made just their third Northeast-10 Championships appearance in their 19 years in the league and their first since the 2006 season, finish the season with a record of 10-8-1. The Panthers, who defeated the Dolphins at Motamed Field, 2-0, 14 days ago, advance to the NE-10 semifinals to take on The College of Saint Rose on Friday.
The first half featured back-and-forth action as the Panthers recorded an 8-7 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to get one of its three shots on goal into the back of the net. The Dolphins were able to control the ball over the early part of the half, registering all seven of their shots over the opening 24 minutes. The final 18:30 of the stanza saw the Panthers record five of their eight shots.
Over the opening 28:11 of the second half, Adelphi forced junior goalkeeper
Tori Corsaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to make three saves, but she was up to the task, as was a defender, who turned away a header by Groth off a corner kick in the 68th minute.
The Panthers took advantage of another corner kick as the clock approached the 75-minute mark to net the game's only goal. Taylor Salmon served the ball in front of the box, where Groth was able to get her head on the ball and drive it into the net for her first goal of the season.
Le Moyne was only able to get one shot off over the final 15 minutes, but it was sent high.
Corsaro finished the game with six saves against the one goal, which lowered her season goals against average to 1.22, the second-best mark in the 34-year history of the program. Northeast-10 Conference goalkeeper of the Year Sam Whitney turned away both shots she faced to earn her 13th win and eighth shutout of the campaign. The Panthers finished the game with a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 10-4 margin in corner kicks.
