WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOPS WHEELING JESUIT, 58-49, IN BATTLE OF JESUIT INSTITUTIONS

Wheeling, W. Va. – Senior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) led three Dolphins in double figures as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team registered a 58-49 victory over Wheeling Jesuit University on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the McDonough Center.

The matchup is one of 91 this season between Jesuit institutions and the ninth of 46 women's games between Jesuit institutions. The Dolphins improve to 2-14 all-time against Jesuit institutions (1-8 vs. Canisius, 0-5 vs. Scranton and 1-1 vs. Wheeling Jesuit), with the previous win coming at home against Canisius during the 1987-88 season.

Marple tallied 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half, while adding three assists and a pair of blocks. With her final point of the night, a free throw with 1:54 left, Marple moved into a tie for 17th place on the program's all-time scoring list with Jennifer Dennett '96 with 883 points. Junior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) registered 11 points, including 10 in the first half, and eight rebounds, while senior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) was the third Dolphin in double digits with 10 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds.

The Cardinals, who defeated the Dolphins, 70-61, in Syracuse 364 days ago, were led offensively by Emily Robinson, who tallied 13 points, eight of which came after halftime. Mariah Callen came off the bench to record 11 points in the second half, while Jaana Motton pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.

The Dolphins opened the game with five points in the first 1:31. Greer buried a three-pointer 13 seconds into the contest and then Andrade made a lay-up.

After Greer made a lay-up to give the Dolphins a 9-6 lead and force a Wheeling Jesuit timeout at the 15:18 mark, the Cardinals scored six straight points for their only lead of the contest. Robinson started the spurt with a lay-up, Kylie Frizell followed with another 44 seconds later and then Motton converted a lay-up with 13:21 left to force a Le Moyne timeout.

Le Moyne answered with six consecutive points of its own as part of a 10-2 run. Marple made a jumper, Vandell hit two free throws to regain the lead for her team and then made a lay-up. Following a lay-up by Jaila Bryant, senior forwards Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) and Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) scored in the paint for 19-14 lead with 8:08 left.

Taylor Lubinsky made a three-pointer with 7:17 to go, but those were Wheeling Jesuit's final points of the half, while the Dolphins tallied 10 points over the last 5:55. Andrade made a lay-up, McMahon converted a foul shot, junior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) made a lay-up, junior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wisc./Sheboygan North), who made her first career start, drilled a three-pointer and then Marple finished off the scoring with fading runner along the right baseline to give the Dolphins a 29-17 lead at the intermission.

The Dolphins extended their lead to a game-best 13 points with five of the first nine points of the second half. After McMahon made a lay-up in between baskets by Bryant, Marple knocked down a three-pointer with 18:13 left.

After Callen and Greer traded three-pointers, resulting in a 37-24 Le Moyne lead, Wheeling Jesuit rattled off 14 of the next 20 points to get within five points with 8:29 left. Six different Cardinals scored in the span, led by four points from Robinson, while Chelsea Richardson capped the streak with a lay-up to make it 43-38 and force a Le Moyne timeout.

Marple scored five straight points over 1:18 to push Le Moyne's lead back to 10. Following a Lydia Hyburg put-back lay-up, Marple made a free throw and freshman guard Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) drained her first career three-pointer from the right wing to force a Wheeling Jesuit timeout with the Dolphins in front 52-40.

Following 4-0 spurts by each team, the Dolphins held the Cardinals to just five points over the last 4:45 to close out the victory.

Le Moyne (7-3), which improves to 5-0 in non-conference play this season, remains on the road and will face Florida Tech at the Panthers' CarMax Holiday Tournament on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
