Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) registered a double-double to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 71-63 win over the University of New Haven on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Court.
With the victory, the Dolphins clinch a berth into the Northeast-10 Conference Championships for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Greer's second double-double of the season consisted of 19 points, 14 of which she scored in the second half, and a career-high 13 rebounds (eight in the second half), while she also blocked two shots. Graduate student guard Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) recorded 17 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) tallied 14 points, nine after halftime, while senior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) was the fourth Dolphin to score in double figures with 10 points, eight of which came in the first 7:36 of the game.
Aquillin Hayes, the reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, registered her third straight double-double with 15 points (12 in the first half) and 13 rebounds. Jasmine Gibson came off the bench to score 11 points in the final 5:51.
After Hayes made a put-back lay-up at the 17:59 mark to give the Chargers a 5-3 lead, the Dolphins rattled off the next 12 points to take their first double-digit lead of the game. Greer started the run with a three-pointer from the left wing, McKnight tallied five points, Stroman made a lay-up off a steal in the backcourt and sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) hit a left baseline jumper.
Following another Hayes basket to get New Haven within 17-9 with 9:36 left, Stroman registered a conventional three-point play and junior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) followed with a three-pointer from the left wing to give Le Moyne its largest lead of the game with 8:54 remaining.
After Marple made a lay-up with 6:05 left to give the Dolphins a 27-15 advantage, the Chargers closed out the half with 15-4 run to get within 31-30 at the intermission. Elizabeth Cruso had five of the first seven points in the streak, while Hayes followed a Bria Moore lay-up with three straight jumpers.
Greer opened the second half with a lay-up, a jumper and a free throw to push Le Moyne's lead back to six with 18:28 remaining.
After Brown gave the Dolphins a 40-35 edge, the Chargers scored six straight points for their first lead in over 23 minutes of game action. Ayana Duncanson started the push with a jumper and Moore followed with four free throws, including the go-ahead attempt with 13:59 remaining.
Following a put-back lay-up by Pucello and a free throw by Hayes to knot the score at 42 with 12:57 left, the Dolphins posted runs of 5-0 and 8-0 around a New Haven basket to take an 11-point lead with 8:35 left. Stroman accounted for the first five points with a three-pointer and a lay-up, while Marple had four of the next eight and Pucello and Greer each had two points.
The teams then split the game's next 16 points over a span of 4:53. Greer (5) and Marple (3) scored all of Le Moyne's points in the span, while Rykema Stone and Gibson each had four points for the Chargers.
New Haven, which had won the previous three meetings in the series, trimmed its deficit down to seven with 1:49 remaining, but McKnight, Marple and Stroman each went 2-for-2 from the foul line over the last 48 seconds to seal the victory.
Le Moyne (13-10, 9-8 NE-10), which has won eight games at home for the first time since the 2007-08 season (8-6), closes out the home portion of its regular season schedule on Saturday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m. Prior to the contest, Stroman, McKnight and guards Raven Short (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) and Ashley Prischak">Ashley Prischak (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
