Box Score 2 Raleigh, N.C. – Sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) drove in all three runs to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a season-opening 3-0 win over Shepherd University on Saturday afternoon at the Shaw University Challenge at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Dolphins recorded a 12-2 victory over Bowie State University later Saturday evening.
The Dolphins scored the only runs they would need against Shepherd in the second inning. After a leadoff single by senior right fielder Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) and an out, Reynolds blasted her first career home run.
Leading off the seventh inning, Reynolds gave the Dolphins an insurance run by launching a solo home run.
Senior southpaw Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) picked up her 59th career victory, the second-most in the program's history, by striking out 14 batters and allowing just two hits in her 80th career complete game, also the second-most in the program's history. Freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) joined Reynolds in posting two hits. Kirsten Barstad suffered the loss after yielding three runs on 10 hits over seven innings, while striking out five.
In their second game of the day, the Dolphins struck for three runs on three hits and a Bowie State in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) led off the frame with a triple to right field and raced home as Case reached on an error by the shortstop. After sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) singled to the shortstop, Capuano grounded out to drive in Case. Sophomore first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) followed with a single to left field to knock in Trotta.
Le Moyne added a pair of runs on three hits in the second inning. Senior second baseman Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) singled and stole second with one out and moved to third on a single to right by Riley. Case then drove in Tram with a sacrifice bunt to the right side. Trotta followed with a single to the shortstop to plate Riley.
Bowie State got on the scoreboard with a run on one hit in the top of the third inning. Cassandra Clayborne walked with one out, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a single to the second baseman by Stefanie Ray.
The Dolphins blew the game open with seven runs on six hits and two Bowie State errors. Cawley drew a walk to open the frame, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on sacrifice fly to left field by senior pitcher Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Home School). Freshman catcher Emily Bagley">Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) then singled to left field, stole second and moved to third on a single to the left side by Reynolds. Tram followed by reaching on a throwing error by the second base to drive in Bagley, while Reynolds scored on the error. Riley then doubled to right field to drive in Tram. After Riley took third on a passed ball, Case doubled to right center to plate Riley. Following a single by Trotta to push Case to third, Capuano lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in Case, while Trotta scored on an error by the right fielder.
Bowie State scored a run in the top of the fourth without getting a hit. Megan Windsor struck out to start the inning, but reached first on a passed ball. Following a walk by Kiara Washington and a groundout, Windsor scored from third on a sacrifice bunt by Erica Atkins.
Utley recorded the win in the circle for the Dolphins by striking out six batters over four innings, while yielding two runs (one earned) on two hits. Riley and Trotta each posted three hits, while Case drove in three runs and Riley scored three times. Ray took the loss after allowing 12 runs (six earned) over four innings.
Le Moyne (2-0), which had its game with Shippensburg on Saturday night cancelled due to darkness, completes play at the Shaw University Challenge on Sunday with games against Mansfield University (9:00 a.m.) and Lock Haven University (1:00 p.m.)
