WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UPENDED BY AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 75-62, IN BATTLE FOR THIRD PLACE

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - Brianna Bishop scored 21 points off the bench to lead American International College to a 75-62 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Butova Gymnasium.

Le Moyne (13-12, 9-10 NE-10), which closes out the regular season on Tuesday at Pace University at 5:30 p.m., will be either the Southwest Division's third or fourth seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Sitting in fourth place right now, the Dolphins can claim the third seed (and a road contest at Northeast #2 Stonehill College in the quarterfinals on Sunday, March 2) with a win at Pace and a loss by American International at Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday. An American International win or a Le Moyne loss gives the Dolphins the fourth seed and a home contest against Northeast #5 Saint Anselm College in the first round on Friday, February 28.

Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) led the Dolphins offensively with 19 points, 15 of which she scored in the first half. Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa/Wellsboro) recorded 16 points, including eight over the first five and one-half minutes of the second half. Sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) posted 12 points, eight of which she scored in the second half.

Bishop tallied 15 of her points in the first half and finished the game with a pair of steals. Krista Ferrentino registered 17 points, including nine in the second half, and pulled down nine rebounds. Kamika Mason came off the bench to record a double-double of 10 points and a game-best 11 rebounds, all of which she grabbed in the second half.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first five points and nine of the first 12 over the opening 4:31. Brown started the scoring with a jumper, Greer followed with a three-pointer, Brown made a transition lay-up and then Marple converted a lay-up.

After junior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) hit a three-pointer to give the Dolphins a 14-9 lead with 11:03 left in the first half, the Yellow Jackets responded with a 23-8 run over the next 7:22 to take their first double-digit lead of the game. Ferrentino scored eight of the first 12 points in the run, while Bishop had eight of the last 10 points in the streak, including back-to-back three-pointers to give AIC a 32-22 lead with 3:41 left.

The Dolphins closed out the half with an 11-5 push to get within four points at halftime. Marple made a three-pointer and a lay-up, Greer had two free throws and a jumper at the buzzer and freshman guard Ailayia Demand">Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) converted two foul shots.

Le Moyne cut its deficit to two points on three occasions over the opening five and one-half minutes of the second half, but could not get any closer. Marple buried two three-pointers and two free throws for eight of Le Moyne's 12 points in the stretch, while Ferrentino had four of American International's 10 points.

After the Dolphins called a timeout following a Marple three-pointer to make the score 47-45, the Yellow Jackets recorded 15 of the next 17 points, including 13 in a row on the backend, to open up their largest lead of the game. Mason scored six straight points to turn a two-point edge into an eight-point advantage, while Bishop followed with consecutive baskets and Sarah Noble capped the run with a three-pointer with 7:19 left to make the score 62-57 and force a Le Moyne timeout.

The Dolphins responded with eight straight points over the next 1:47 to cut their deficit to seven with 5:29 left. Greer and Brown each made two free throws before each made a basket.

American International held off Le Moyne's rally by getting a jumper from Erica Johnson and a conventional three-point play by Ferrentino to push the lead back to nine.

The Yellow Jackets closed out the game by making all eight of their free throw attempts over the final 73 seconds of the contest, while the Dolphins scored just two points in the span.
