Box Score 2 Raleigh, N.C. – The Le Moyne College softball team closed out its trip to the Shaw University Challenge with a pair of losses on Sunday at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. In their first game of the day, the Dolphins fell to Mansfield University, 1-0, while falling to Lock Haven University, 8-0, in six innings in the nightcap.
In Le Moyne's first game of the day, Mansfield scored the game's only run on a two-out, solo home run to left field by pitcher Kate Pratt in the third inning.
The Dolphins had their best chance to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, but Pratt was able to get out of the inning. Sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) walked to open the frame and then senior second baseman Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) reached on a fielding error. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) drew a walk to load the bases. However, Pratt induced a pop out back to herself for the final out of the inning.
Le Moyne threatened again in the fifth inning, but were unable to break through. Tram led off with a single and then freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) doubled to right center to push Tram to third. Pratt was able to induce three consecutive groundouts, including two straight back to herself, to get out of trouble.
Senior lefty Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the tough-luck loss after striking out 10 batters, while yielding just the one run on three hits. Pratt earned the win for the Mounties after allowing just three hits over five innings in the circle. Ashley Inman picked up the save after striking out three over the final two innings.
In the nightcap, the Lady Eagles scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the third on a solo home run to left field by pitcher Jessie Probst.
Lock Haven pushed its lead to four in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on two hits. After Probst drew a walk with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, she came around to score on a double to left field by shortstop Sarah Schwalm. Center fielder Jodi Weaknecht followed with a home run to make the score 4-0.
The Lady Eagles ended the game with four runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error in the sixth inning. Right fielder Chelsea Edwards reached on an error by the shortstop to open the frame and then first baseman Erica Pooler drew a walk. Second baseman Michelle Holweger followed with a single to center to drive in Edwards. After a walk by catcher Kassandra Atherton drew a walk to load the bases, Probst singled to right field to knock in pinch-runner Paige Stuppy and Holweger. Following a Le Moyne pitching change and a walk by pinch-hitter Morgan Palmer to load the bases again, pinch-hitter Katie Diehl singled to right field to plate Atherton with the game-ending run.
Freshman Chelsea Claflin">Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) took the loss in her first collegiate start after yielding four runs on five hits over four and two-thirds innings pitched. Trotta recorded two of Le Moyne's four hits in the game. Probst earned the win after tossing six scoreless innings, while giving up just four hits and one walk.
Le Moyne (2-2) is back in action on Saturday, March 8 with a doubleheader at Dowling College. First pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.
