Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Calli Balfour scored 22 points to lead Adelphi University to an 80-57 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday evening at Ted Grant Court.
Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) led the Dolphins in the loss with 16 points, while adding four assists and three rebounds. Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) registered 15 points and four rebounds, while sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) posted 12 points and four rebounds.
Balfour registered 13 of her game-high point total in the second half, while pulling down eight rebounds. Jessica Kitrys, the leading scorer in the Northeast-10, recorded a double-double of 12 points and a game-best 13 rebounds, while dishing out five assists. Tara Flynn came off the bench to record 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting, including a 4-of-4 mark from three-point range. Sade Jackson, the national assist leader, recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Following a Greer lay-up with 14:20 left in the first half that pulled the Dolphins within 12-8, the Panthers rattled off nine straight points for their first double-digit lead of the game. Kitrys made a lay-up, Flynn followed with her first three-pointer, Jackson made a jumper and then Balfour converted a lay-up for a 21-8 lead with 11:55 to play.
After the teams went back-and-forth over the next three minutes, resulting in a 28-14 Adelphi advantage with 8:59 to go, the Dolphins scored 15 of the next 20 points to cut their deficit to four with 4:10 left in the stanza. Marple had the first nine points on three lay-ups and three free throws, Greer followed with a pair of lay-ups off feeds from Marple and then Brown knocked down a fast-break jump shot from the foul line.
Adelphi answered back with nine consecutive points to regain its 13-point lead. Shannon Flynn started the spurt with two free throws, Kitrys followed with a lay-up and two free throws and then Jenna Halaby registered a conventional three-point play with 1:09 remaining.
The Dolphins scored the last five points of the half to close within 42-34 at the intermission. After Greer had a conventional three-point play with 50 seconds left to cap a 13-point half, her third straight double-digit half, freshman guard Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) converted a lay-up to make the score 42-34.
The Panthers scored the first four points of the second half to push their lead to 46-34, but the Dolphins answered with six straight to close within six points, but could not get any closer. Marple started the spurt with a lay-up and Brown followed with a pair of baskets in the paint.
After Marple nailed a three-pointer from the left wing with 14:39 left to get the Dolphins within 50-43, the Panthers scored nine of the next 10 points to regain control of the game. Jackson buried a three-pointer from the top of the key, Kitrys followed with a lay-up and then Balfour made consecutive shots.
Following a 4-2 spurt by the Dolphins to make the score 61-48 with 9:20 left, Adelphi ran off 16 of the next 20 points to put the game away. Balfour had nine of the points on three lay-ups and a three-pointer, while Tara Flynn had five points and Kitrys made a jumper in the paint.
After Tara Flynn capped Adelphi's scoring with a three-pointer from the right wing with 40 seconds left, freshman guard Caity Kuhnen">Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) finished off the game's scoring with a three-pointer from the right corner with 31 seconds to go.
Le Moyne (11-10, 7-8 NE-10), which was swept by the Panthers for the third time in the five seasons that Adelphi has been in the Northeast-10 Conference, returns to action on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University (12-9, 8-7 NE-10) at 1:30 p.m.
