Box Score New Haven, Conn. - Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 63-60 overtime victory over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Moore Field House.
Marple, who has scored at least 20 points in eight games this season, tallied 13 of her points after halftime, including four of Le Moyne's five points in overtime. She added five rebounds, four of which were on the offensive end, and two assists. Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) registered 11 points as the only other Dolphin to reach double-digit scoring, while pulling down a team-best nine rebounds.
Taylor McLaughlin came off the bench to lead the Owls with 18 points, including 10 in the first half, while grabbing six rebounds. Jackie Beathea recorded 15 points (14 in the first half) and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Keshia Primo also tallied 15 points.
The teams went back-and-forth over the opening 7:45, resulting in a 13-12 Southern Connecticut State advantage. Primo had five points and Beathea had four from the foul line for the Owls, while Greer buried a pair of three-pointers for the Dolphins.
After McLaughlin put the Owls in front with a jumper, the Dolphins scored five straight points. Junior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) drilled a three-pointer at the 11:50 mark and classmate Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) followed with a jump shot.
The Dolphins, who won at Moore Field House for the first time since February 20, 2002, snapping a streak of 10 consecutive losses, pushed their lead to seven on three occasions, the last of which was 28-21 on a jumper by graduate student guard Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) with 5:45 remaining, but the Owls responded with a 15-4 run over the next five minutes to take the lead. McLaughlin led the charge with two jumpers and a pair of free throws around two foul shots by Beathea to get within 32-29. Sydni Lester then recorded a conventional three-point play to knot the score at 32 with 2:26 to go. After McLaughlin made a jumper with 2:06 left for the lead, Beathea converted two foul shots with 31 seconds left for a four-point edge.
Marple knocked down a jump shot with 18 seconds left to pull the Dolphins within 36-34 at halftime.
The teams alternated points over the first eight minutes of the second half with the Dolphins tying the score on three occasions. Following a jumper by McLaughlin with 12:26 left put the Owls up 45-42, senior guard Ashley Prischak (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) drilled a three-pointer from the right wing to even the score.
After the game was tied by the Dolphins at 47, 49 and 51, Danielle Powell gave Southern Connecticut State its last lead by making a free throw with 5:06 remaining.
Marple then gave the Dolphins the lead twice in a span of 41 seconds. She put her team up 54-52 by drilling a three-pointer with 3:29 left. After McLaughlin evened the score with a jumper at the 3:20 mark, Marple converted a jumper with 2:48 remaining.
Following a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Maggie Brown">Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) with 2:20 to play to put the Dolphins up four, Primo answered with a three-pointer from the right wing 26 seconds later to make it a one-point game.
After the Dolphins turned the ball over on their next possession, Beathea drew a two-shot foul with 1:09 to go. She missed the first, but was able to follow a Le Moyne timeout by making the second to tie the score at 58-apiece.
Following a Le Moyne turnover with 53 seconds left and a missed shot by Primo with 42 ticks remaining, the Dolphins had a pair of shots in the paint in the final seven seconds, but could not convert. Primo was able to get off a three-pointer from the left wing with one second left, but it was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.
After two empty possessions by each team over the first 90 seconds of the overtime period, Marple gave the Dolphins the lead by making a jumper with 3:28 left.
The Owls, who entered the game winners of six of their last seven games, missed their next four shots, while the Dolphins committed three consecutive turnovers before Stroman drew a foul with 30 seconds to play. She connected on the second to push Le Moyne's lead to 61-58.
After Powell made a shot in the paint with 11.2 seconds to go, Marple buried a pair of free throws with 8.2 seconds left to push the lead back to three. After the Dolphins used one of their "fouls to give" with six seconds left, Southern Connecticut State got off a potential game-tying three-pointer from the right wing with one second left, but it was off the mark.
Le Moyne (12-10, 8-8 NE-10), which can clinch a berth in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships for the first time since the 2008-09 season with one win over its last four games or one Saint Rose loss over its last four games, returns to action on Tuesday at home against the University of New Haven at 5:00 p.m.
