Box Score 2 Salem, Va. – Freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) had three hits and scored four runs to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 14-3 win over Edinboro University on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex. In their second game of the day, the Dolphins fell to Malone University, 9-7.
Edinboro got on the scoreboard first with a run on two hits in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Brenna Cosgrove led off with a single and then stole second. After a fly out and a walk, first baseman Haley Struebing singled to plate Cosgrove.
The Dolphins responded with three runs on four hits and two Edinboro errors in the bottom of the frame. Freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) led off with a walk and Case followed with a single. Sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) then reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Riley and Case to score. After a pair of outs on the basepaths, sophomore first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) singled and senior pitcher Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) doubled. Senior right fielder Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) followed with a singled to drive in Cawley.
Le Moyne added three runs on three hits in the second inning. Senior second baseman Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) led off with a single and then Case drew a one-out walk. Following a single by Trotta and an out at the plate, Cawley doubled to knock in Case, Trotta and junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge).
The Fighting Scots scored twice in the third inning without getting a hit. Third baseman Brooke Callaghan walked with one out and then Struebing reached on an error by the third baseman. Following a strikeout and a hit batsman to load the bases, shortstop Heather Tighe and right fielder Courtney Korpus drew consecutive walks to force in Callaghan and Struebing with unearned runs.
The Dolphins got the two runs back, plus two more, in the bottom of the third to take a 10-3 lead. After a lead-off single by Ostrander, sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) doubled to score Ostrander. Following an out, Riley plated Reynolds with a double. Case then singled to knock in Riley. Two batters later, Capuano singled to drive in Case.
Le Moyne capped the game's scoring with four runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Ostrander singled with one out and then Reynolds was hit by a pitch. After a groundout, Riley singled to drive in Ostrander and Reynolds. Case followed with a single to plate Riley, while then scoring on a single by Trotta.
Harrison earned her second win of the season by striking out eight over five innings in the circle, while yielding three runs (one earned) on six hits. Ostrander joined Case in posting three hits, while Riley scored three times and Ostrander and Reynolds each scored twice.
Samantha Weaver took the loss for the Fighting Scots after allowing 14 runs on 16 hits over four innings.
In Le Moyne's second game of the day, Malone scored nine runs in the first inning on five hits and a Le Moyne error. Shortstop Alexa Holztrager opened with a single, moved to second on a walk by center fielder Mikayla Fowler and then scored on a single by designated player Emily Isla. After a walk by second baseman Desi Hengoed to load the bases, first baseman Allison Mercado was hit by a pitch to force in Fowler. Right fielder Erika Gerber then singled to plate Isla and Hengoed. After third baseman Katie Snoddy reached on an error by the first baseman to load the bases again and an out at the plate, left fielder Emily Kahoun drew a walk to force in Gerber. Holztrager then singled to knock in Snoddy. Following a Le Moyne pitching change and a pop out, Isla cleared the bases with a double to cap the team's scoring in the inning and game.
The Dolphins cut into their deficit with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning. Reynolds led off with a single and then stole second. After a single and stolen base by Tram, Reynolds scored on a wild pitch. Following a pop out and a walk by Case, Tram stole home as Case stole second. Trotta then blasted a two-run homer to make the score 9-4.
Le Moyne had four straight hits to start the seventh inning, scoring three runs in the process, but Malone pitcher Jillian Coyle was able to retire three straight batters to end the game. After Trotta and Cawley opened the inning with singles, Capuano singled to knock in Trotta. Freshman pitcher Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) followed with a single to drive in senior pinch-runner Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland) and Capuano.
Senior Vanessa Utley">Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled) suffered the loss after allowing nine runs (five earned), while retiring just one batter. Trotta had three hits in the game, while Cawley, Capuano, Reynolds and Tram each had two. Coyle earned her fifth win after striking out three batters, while giving up seven runs on 12 hits.
Le Moyne (3-3) continues play at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday with games against East Stroudsburg at 11:00 a.m. and West Virginia State at 1:00 p.m.
