Box Score 2 Brookhaven, N.Y. - Senior pitcher/designated player Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) struck out seven and scored a run to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a split of a doubleheader with Dowling College on Wednesday afternoon at Golden Lions Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 2-0, while falling in the nightcap, 3-2.
The Dolphins scored the only run they would need in the first game on two hits and a Dowling error in the second inning. Harrison singled up the middle with one out and then took second on a two-out single to right field by freshman designated player/pitcher Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek). Senior second baseman Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) then reached on an error by the second baseman, which allowed Harrison to come around and score.
Le Moyne added a run on one hit in the top of the third inning. Freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) drew a walk to open the frame, but was forced out at second for the inning's second out as junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) followed with a double to right center to knock in Capuano.
Harrison earned the win in the circle by striking out seven in a complete-game performance, while yielding just four hits. Erika Nogan took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits over five innings.
In the nightcap, the Golden Lions struck first with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Right fielder Crystal Tarango led off with a single to right center and then took second on a groundout. After a pop out, first baseman Jamie Laird singled through the left side to knock in Tarango.
The Dolphins took the lead in the third inning with two runs on three hits. Claflin opened the frame with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a double to center by freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park). Two batters later, sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta">Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) singled to center to drive in Riley.
Dowling evened the score at two in the bottom of the sixth on three hits. Laird singled through the right side with one out and left fielder Stephanie Staiano followed with a single to the shortstop. Center fielder Amber Fogarty then doubled to right center to plate pinch-runner Nicole Parkas, while Staiano was thrown out at the plate.
After the Dolphins advanced a runner to third with one out in the top of the seventh and failed to score, the Golden Lions won the game in the bottom of the frame on two hits and a Le Moyne error. Second baseman Erica Fischetti singled to left center with one out and then advanced to third as Tarango reached on an error by the second baseman. Shortstop Victoria Gallagher followed with a single to right field to knock in Fischetti.
Harrison suffered the loss out of the bullpen after allowing two runs on six hits over two and one-third innings pitched. Case and Trotta each had two of Le Moyne's nine hits. Michele Andrews earned the win in relief for the Golden Lions by tossing four and one-third scoreless innings.
Le Moyne (7-5) visits LIU Post on Thursday for a doubleheader that starts at 1:30 p.m.
