Box Score 2 Brookville, N.Y. – Aly Dzierzynski and Paige Swantek each blasted two home runs to lead LIU Post to a sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Softball Complex. The Pioneers rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener before posting a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
The Dolphins opened the day's scoring with a run on two hits in the first inning of the first game. Freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) led off with a single through the left side and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman designated player/pitcher Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek). Freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) followed with a double to right center to knock in Case.
Le Moyne added one run on two hits in the fourth inning. Sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) led off with a single to the shortstop and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool). Two batters later, Claflin doubled to left center to drive in Reynolds.
The Pioneers answered back in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on two hits. After Alexis Gonzalez led off with a single to center, Swantek smacked a one-out, two-run home run over the fence in left center to tie the score at two.
LIU Post added three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth. Maria Palmeri opened the frame with a single to right and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Carly Chamberlain. After a pair of outs and a hit batsman, Gonzalez drilled a three-run homer down the right field line.
The Dolphins pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh and moved the tying run to third base, but could not score the equalizer. Riley led off with a single to right field and came around to score on a two-out double by junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge). After sophomore first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) was hit by a pitch, Reynolds singled to right center to knock in Capuano and move Cawley to third base. Quincy Lewis then took over in the circle for the Pioneers and recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Senior southpaw Sarah Harrison">Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss for the Dolphins after yielding five runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings, while striking out two. Case, Riley, Cawley and Reynolds each had two of Le Moyne's 12 hits. Liz Weber, who earned First Team All-Northeast-10 Conference honors as a freshman for the Dolphins, earned the win in the circle for the Pioneers after allowing four runs on 12 hits and four walks over six and two-thirds innings. Lewis earned a save for her one-out performance.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored the only runs they would need on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. After Nicole Hagenah and Swantek singled to open the frame, Dzierzynski blasted a three-run home run to right center.
Following a lead-off double to right center in the fourth inning by Swantek, Dzierzynski homered to left field to give the Pioneers a 5-0 lead.
Swantek ended the scoring for the day with a two-run homer to left field in the sixth inning after Hagenah led off with a double to center.
Harrison dropped to 5-5 on the season after allowing five runs on six hits over three innings in the circle. Ashley Martin earned the win for LIU Post after striking out nine in a three-hit shutout.
Le Moyne (7-7) is scheduled to be back in action against The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Le Moyne College Softball Complex.
