Jackie Sileo recorded five points to lead top-ranked LIU Post to a
13-5 win over the fourth-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse
team on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Hickox
Field.
The Pioneers, who have won 25 straight games, including each of
the last two NCAA Division II National Championships, opened the
game's scoring just 65 seconds into the contest as Morgan Chiarenza
finished off a pass from Katie Rotan.
Le Moyne answered back just 1:22 later as senior midfielder
Victoria Nies (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) found the back
of the net off a feed from junior attacker Julia Suriani
(Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca East).
LIU Post responded with six goals over a span of 12:57 to take
control of the game. Stefani Vagelatos started the run at the 24:47
mark after taking a pass from Sileo. Just over two minutes later,
Connor Bird tallied an unassisted goal. Vagelatos and Sileo
connected for another goal with 15:22 left, while Chiarenza
registered an unassisted marker with 14:16 remaining. Rotan, a
first team all-American last year, found the back of the net with
12:39 to go off a feed from Sileo, while feeding Vagelatos for LIU
Post's seventh goal with 11:50 remaining in the first half.
The Pioneers scored the first five goals of the second half to put
the game away. Sileo tallied her fourth goal of the season 1:51
into the stanza off a pass from Chiarenza. Following eight
scoreless minutes, Cara Douglas recorded an unassisted goal to make
the score 9-1. She then scored another unassisted goal with 16:26
remaining. Chiarenza gave the Pioneers a 10-goal advantage with
15:30 remaining off a pass from Samantha Losco. Douglas capped the
5-0 run by finishing off a feed from Sileo with 13:10 to go.
The Dolphins closed out the game by scoring four of the last five
goals. Nies snapped the team's scoring drought of 46:16 with her
fourth goal of the season at the 11:17 mark after taking a pass
from graduate student attacker Marley Ciferri
(Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca/Syracuse). With 9:00 remaining,
junior attacker Catie McKay (Penfield,
N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) picked up the rebound after a shot
was saved and dumped it into the back of the net for her first goal
of the season.
After Jenna Pierro scored for the Pioneers with 4:15 left,
sophomore attacker Claire Monnat
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) finished off a feed from
sophomore attacker Maggie Monnat
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) for her team-best fifth
goal of the year. Junior attacker Sam Yaro">Sam Yaro (Baldwinsville,
N.Y./C.W. Baker) completed the game's scoring with an
unassisted goal with 1:03 left.
Freshman goalkeeper Christina Humbert (Webster,
N.Y./Webster Thomas) suffered the loss between the pipes
after yielding 11 goals over 44:58, while making six saves. Katie
Hannan earned the win after making 14 saves.
Le Moyne (1-1), which scored its fewest goals and suffered its
largest margin of defeat in its four seasons at the Division II
level, returns to action on Monday against Mercyhurst University at
3:00 p.m.
