BASEBALL SPLITS HOME-OPENING DOUBLEHEADER WITH PACE, 8-2, 1-3

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomores Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) each had two hits and three RBI in the middle of the order to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 8-2 win over Pace University in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Setters picked up the win in the nightcap, 3-1.

The Dolphins took advantage of two Pace errors in the bottom of the first inning to score a pair of runs. After junior right fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) singled to center to start the frame, sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) reached second on a fielding error by the third baseman, which allowed Mathers to take third. Following an out, Wright knocked in Mathers with a sacrifice fly to center, but was able to reach second as the centerfielder dropped the ball. West then lifted a sacrifice fly to right center to plate Charbonneau from third.

Le Moyne added three runs on two hits in the bottom of the third. After drawing a walk with one out and stealing second base, Charbonneau came around to score on a single up the middle by Wright. West then launched the first pitch he saw over the fence in right center for his second career home run.

Pace got on the scoreboard with two runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error in the fifth inning. After designated hitter John Kukura singled up the middle to open the frame, he took third as left fielder David Pepe singled down the right field line and took second on a fielding error by the right fielder. Shortstop Brett Bittiger then grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Kukura. Second baseman Andrew Coffey then eluded the tag on a bunt single down the first base line to plate Pepe.

The Dolphins got one of the runs back on one hit and a Pace error in the bottom of the inning. Following a pair of fly outs to start the frame, sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) reached second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Wright then doubled to left center to drive in Swetman.

Le Moyne completed the game's scoring with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Senior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) led off with a single to second and then took second on a walk by freshman center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day). After an out, junior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) singled down the left field line to drive in Reynolds. Following an out, Charbonneau singled through the left side to knock in DiNorcia.

Junior southpaw Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) earned his first victory of the season after striking out nine batters over eight innings on the mound, while yielding two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks. Brian Sundberg took the loss for the Setters after giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits over four and two-thirds innings.

In the nightcap, the Setters scored the only runs they would need on two hits in the second inning. After a single up the middle by right fielder James Pjura to open the frame, catcher Tom Midolo blasted a home run to left field.

Pace added a run without getting a hit in the fourth inning. Third baseman Chris Gili reached on a throwing error by the third baseman to start the frame, took second on a groundout, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch.

Le Moyne got on the scoreboard in the sixth with one run on two hits. DiNorcia led off with a double to right field and moved to third on a double play by the Setters. Mathers followed with a single to left field to drive in DiNorcia, took second on an error by the left fielder and moved to third on a wild pitch, but was left stranded 90 feet from home.

Redshirt freshman pitcher Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) dropped to 4-3 on the year after yielding three runs (two earned) on eight hits over eight innings, while striking out seven. Jonathan Chudy earned the win for the Setters after striking out five over seven and one-third innings, while allowing one run on four hits. John Garran picked up his first save after retiring five of the six batters he faced, including three via strikes.

Le Moyne (10-16, 4-3 NE-10, 1-2 SW), which became the last team in the conference to play a home game, closes out the series with the Setters on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. A win would give the Dolphins their first series victory over the Setters in their three years as a member of the NE-10.
