Garden City, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman righty Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) tossed a complete game to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 9-1 win over Adelphi University on Friday afternoon in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers rallied in the ninth inning of the nightcap for an 8-7 win.
The Dolphins started the scoring in the second inning of game one with two runs on one hit and one Adelphi error. Sophomore designated hitter/catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) drew a walk to open the frame and then took second on a single to left field by senior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell). West then came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher, which allowed Reynolds to advance to third. After an out, freshman catcher Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Reynolds.
Le Moyne added one run on one hit in the fifth inning. Freshman center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) led off with a triple to left center and then scored as Buroni reached on a fielder's choice.
The Dolphins scored once on one hit and an Adelphi error in the sixth. Sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) opened the frame with a single and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. After an Adelphi pitching change with one out, Reynolds lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Swetman.
Le Moyne added three runs in the seventh on two hits. Buroni drew a walk to start the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then took third on a bunt single by junior right fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.). After a walk by sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) to load the bases, Swetman tripled down the left field line to plate Buroni, Mathers and Charbonneau.
The Dolphins completed their scoring with two runs on one hit in the eighth inning. Reynolds was hit by a pitch to start the frame and then advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. After two outs and a walk by junior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany), Reynolds scored on a wild pitch, which allowed Nagelsmith to take second. Mathers followed with a single through the right side to drive in Nagelsmith.
Adelphi got on the scoreboard with one run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth. Third baseman Rob Burns led off with a single up the middle, took second on a passed ball and then scored on a double to right center by right fielder Alex Zykoff.
O'Kane picked up his fifth win of the year by striking out seven batters in his conference-best fourth complete game of the season, while yielding just the one run on nine hits. Mathers and Swetman each had two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Jonathan Mulford took the loss for the Panthers after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits over five and one-third innings pitched.
The Dolphins struck first in the nightcap with two runs in the first inning on two hits. Charbonneau was hit by a pitch with one out and then took second on a wild pitch. Swetman followed with a double down the left field line to drive in Charbonneau. After a single by sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), West grounded out to the first baseman to knock in Swetman.
Adelphi got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on one hit and a Le Moyne error. After Brandon Stahl reached second on a dropped fly ball by the centerfielder with one out, Nick Zito doubled to left field with two outs to drive in Stahl.
Le Moyne regained its two-run lead in the second on two hits. DiNorcia led off with a single through the right side and then took second on a passed ball. After an out and a single by Nagelsmith, Mathers lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate DiNorcia.
The Panthers took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the second with three runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error. Zykoff led off with a single up the middle and then took second as catcher Daniel Taliercio reached on an error by the catcher. After a groundout, shortstop Michael Stack reached on a fielder's choice to knock in Zykoff. Center fielder Cliff Brantley then tripled down the right field line to drive in pinch-runner Kevin Hutzel and Stack.
The Dolphins took the lead back with two runs in the fifth inning. After a two-out walk by Swetman, Wright launched a two-run home run off the scoreboard.
Le Moyne extended its lead with two runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Reynolds and DiNorcia opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After an Adelphi pitching change and an out, Nagelsmith singled up the middle to drive in Reynolds from third, while taking second on the throw home. Mathers followed with a single to left center to drive in Nagelsmith.
Adelphi rallied for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the ninth to win the game. Stack led off with a single through the right side and then took second on a wild pitch. After Brantley was hit by a pitch, Stahl doubled to right center to knock in Stack. Brantley then raced home on a wild pitch, while allowed Stahl to advance to third. Following a strikeout and a Le Moyne pitching change, Zito singled through the right side to drive in Stahl with the tying run. After a walk by first baseman Kyle Ambury, another Le Moyne pitching change and another strikeout, catcher Rich Cambria singled to left field to plate pinch-runner John Campbell with the winning run.
Junior southpaw Bobby Renaud (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) took the loss after allowing one run on one hit and one walk, without recording an out, in the ninth inning. Wright, DiNorcia and Nagelsmith each accounted for two of Le Moyne's 11 hits. Nikolas Batas earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while striking out three.
Le Moyne (12-18, 6-5 NE-10, 3-4 SW), which has traded wins and losses over its last eight games, completes its three-game series with the Panthers on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
