Syracuse, N.Y. – Yesenia Evaristo tossed a five-hitter and smacked a home run to lead Southern Connecticut State University to 5-0 win over the Le Moyne College softball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
Prior to the game, the senior class of Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled), Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville), Amy Bogolin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) and Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland) were honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Owls scored the only run they would need on a solo home run to right center by left fielder Julie Muscarella with two outs in the top of the fourth inning.
Southern Connecticut added three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. First baseman Sarah Koerner led off with a single to third base and advanced to second on a single down the first base line by second baseman Giuliana D'Arcangelo. Following a fly out, Muscarella lifted a sacrifice fly down the left field line to drive in Koerner from third. Evaristo followed with a two-run homer to left center to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.
The Owls tacked on one run on one hit in the seventh inning. Designated player Kelly Mitchell led off with a walk, stole second and then took third on a sacrifice bunt. Koerner then singled up the middle to plate Mitchell.
Harrison suffered the loss in the circle after yielding four runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings pitched, while striking out four batters. Junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) recorded two of Le Moyne's five hits, while freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) drew a walk in the third inning to extend her streak of reaching base to 31 consecutive games. Evaristo recorded eight strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the season.
Le Moyne (22-13, 13-6 NE-10, 10-5 SW), which completed its home schedule with a 7-2 record, visits Georgian Court University on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. In the first NCAA Division II North Region rankings of the season, which were released this past Wednesday, the Lions were ranked seventh, while the Dolphins were ninth.
