SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH SAINT ROSE, 6-1, 4-5

Albany, N.Y. – Freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) had three hits and two runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 6-1 win over The College of Saint Rose in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Cathy Haker Field. The Golden Knights rallied for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Saint Rose started the scoring in the game as left fielder Kari Bird hit a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.

The Dolphins responded with runs in each of the next five innings. In the top of the third, sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) led off with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Case followed with a single to center to drive in Reynolds with the tying run.

Le Moyne took the lead in the fourth with a run on one hit. Senior right fielder Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) drew a walk with two outs and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Reynolds then singled to center to knock in Ostrander.

The Dolphins added one run on two hits in the fifth inning. Case led off with a single to center and then moved to second on a groundout with one out. Sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) followed with a double to right field to knock in Case.

In the sixth inning, Le Moyne scored twice on three hits. Ostrander singled with one out and then took second as Reynolds was hit by a pitch. Following an out, Case singled to left to plate Ostrander. Junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) followed with a single to center to drive in Reynolds.

The Dolphins capped off the game's scoring with a run on two hits in the seventh inning. Trotta opened the frame with a single to right and took second on a ground ball. Ostrander then doubled to right to score Trotta.

Senior southpaw Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) earned the win in the circle by striking out 10 batters, while yielding just the one run on five hits. By striking out the first batter she faced, Harrison became the first player in the program's history to register 800 career strikeouts. In addition to Case's three hits, Trotta, Ostrander and Reynolds also posted multiple hits with two apiece. Nicole Wickham took the loss for the Golden Knights after giving up six runs on 11 hits, while striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Golden Knights struck for three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Danielle Brusca led off with a double to left field and came around to score on a one-out double to left by first baseman Olivia Reeves. After a single by designated player Zoe Dubois to push Reeves to third, third baseman Carly Woods doubled to left center to knock in Reeves. Bird followed with a sacrifice fly to right to plate Dubois.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard with a run on two hits in the top of the third inning. Reynolds singled to right field with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Case then singled to center to drive in Reynolds.

Le Moyne took the lead with three runs on two hits and a Saint Rose error in the fourth frame. Trotta led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior designated player Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled) followed with a double to center to knock in Trotta. Ostrander then reached on a three-base error by the center fielder, which allowed Utley to score. Ostrander then raced home on a passed ball for the go-ahead run.

The Golden Knights evened the score at four apiece in the bottom of the fifth on a lead-off home run by Reeves.

Saint Rose plated the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on two hits. Catcher Alexis Williams led off with a double to left field. Pinch-runner Meghan Reynolds then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by center fielder Amber Loussedes.

Harrison took the loss in relief after giving up two runs on four hits over three and one-third innings, while striking out four. Renee Vaiano earned her first win by striking out eight, while yielding four runs (three earned) on seven hits.

Le Moyne (10-8, 3-1 NE-10), which had its seven-game win streak against the Golden Knights snapped with the game two loss, returns to action on Saturday at Stonehill College at 12:30 p.m.
