Waltham, Mass. – Freshman Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) and senior Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) each tossed two-hitters to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of Bentley University on Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The Dolphins won the opener, 6-1, and edged the Falcons in the nightcap, 1-0.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with three runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) led off with a triple to left field and then scored on a groundout by junior pinch-hitter Jillian Jacinth (West Babylon, N.Y./Babylon). Following a single to right field and stolen base by freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) tripled to right field to knock in Riley. Sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) followed with a single to center to knock in Trotta.
Le Moyne added to its lead with one run on two hits in the fourth inning. Senior designated player Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled) opened the frame with a double to left and then took third on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Case singled to center to drive in Utley.
The Dolphins extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth with one run on two hits. Reynolds doubled to left with one out, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single to left by Utley.
Bentley got into the scoring column with one run on one hit in the bottom of the fifth. Jackie Gauthier led off with a triple to left and then scored on a suicide squeeze by Samantha Tierney.
Le Moyne finished off the game's scoring in the sixth inning with one run on one hit and a Bentley error. Freshman pinch-hitter Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) reached second on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder to start the inning. After a pair of outs, Riley singled to knock in senior pinch-runner/right fielder Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville).
Claflin recorded her fourth straight victory by yielding just the one run on only two hits, while striking out one batter. Case finished the game with three hits, while Riley, Reynolds and Utley each had two hits. Halley McDevitt took the loss for the Falcons after giving up three runs on six hits over the first two and one-third innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the game's only run on two hits in the fifth inning. Harrison singled to right field with one out and was then replaced at first base by senior pinch-runner Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland). After Jacinth was hit by a pitch pinch-hitting for Ostrander, sophomore pinch-hitter Mackenzie Dreher (Hinckley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) singled to left field to drive in Batson.
Harrison struck out 10 batters in her 90th career complete game to pick up her eighth win of the season, while giving up just two hits and one walk. Kelsey Smith was the hard-luck loser, allowing just the one run on three hits, while striking out four.
