SAINT ROSE EDGES BASEBALL, 6-4, TO TIE “UPSTATE CHALLENGE” AT 7-7

Syracuse, N.Y. – Lukas Nethaway had three hits to lead The College of Saint Rose to a 6-4 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division on Thursday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.

With the victory, Saint Rose ties the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions at 7-7. The Dolphins retain the trophy by virtue of last year's victory.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with a run on three hits in the second inning. Sophomore designated hitter Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) led off with a single to left field and then took second on a single with one out by freshman center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day). After a fly out, freshman catcher Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) singled to left center to plate West.

Saint Rose answered with four runs on five hits and one Le Moyne error. Catcher Patrick Griffin reached on a bunt single down the third baseline with one out and then advanced to third on a double down the left field line by center fielder Derek Reed. After designated hitter Nick Venier walked to load the bases, Griffin scored on an error by the first baseman on a pickoff attempt by the catcher. Right fielder/first baseman Scott Hladik then singled to left field to knock in Reed from second. First baseman Zac Bellinger followed with a single to center to plate Venier, while second baseman Chad Adams then singled to left to drive in Hladik.

Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on three hits. Sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled to left field with one out and then sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled off the wall in right field. After West drew a walk, senior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) singled in front of the plate to drive in Charbonneau.

The Dolphins got within 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth with one run on two hits, but left the bases loaded. West started the rally with a two-out single up the middle and then took second on a wild pitch. After Reynolds walked, DiNorcia doubled to right field to knock in West. Following a walk to load the bases, Joe Pokrentowski came out of the bullpen for the Golden Knights and induced a groundout to end the inning.

The Golden Knights regained their two-run lead in the top of the sixth on an error by the Dolphins. Adams was hit by a pitch with one out, took second on a wild pitch and then moved to third on a groundout. Left fielder Brian Maynard then reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, which allowed Adams to score.

The Dolphins again loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but Pokrentowski got out of the frame unscathed by inducing a groundout in front of the plate.

Nethaway added an insurance run for the Golden Knights by leading off the ninth inning with a solo home run to left field.

Le Moyne scored once in the bottom of the ninth on two hits and a Saint Rose error to narrow the final margin of defeat. Reynolds led off with a single to right center, but was then retired at second as sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman. Buroni then singled up the middle to knock in Swetman with the final run of the game.

Redshirt freshman righty Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) suffered his third straight home loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits and two walks in a complete-game performance, while striking out five batters. Pokrentowski earned the win out of the bullpen after tossing three and one-third scoreless innings, while yielding one hit and striking out two. Ryan Harper earned his first save of the year by striking out two batters in the ninth.

Le Moyne (16-22, 10-9 NE-10, 7-8 SW), which drops to 4-4 at home this season, closes out the regular season with a three-game series against American International College at home on Friday and Saturday. The Dolphins and Yellow Jackets open the series on Friday with one game, starting at 3:00 p.m.
