MARPLE NETS 1000TH POINT AS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOPS ASSUMPTION, 69-58

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) scored a career-high 32 points, including her 1000th career point, to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 69-58 victory over Assumption College on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Marple, who became the 14th player in the program's 39-year history to score 1000 career points, reached the milestone with a top-of-the-key three-pointer with 10:58 remaining in the game.  She is the first Dolphin to net 1000 points since Courtney Coryea '10 reached the plateau on December 2, 2009 and is just the third player to do so over the last 12 seasons. The last Le Moyne guard to reach the mark was Kim Wagoner '08 on February 19, 2007. Marple's 32 points, 21 of which she scored in the second half, are the most in a game in the Northeast-10 Conference this season and are tied for the fifth-most in a single game in the program's history. Jennifer Shea '89 scored between 32 and 36 points four times in 1988 and 1989, while Jennifer Feher '04 netted 33 on January 15, 2005. Marple has tallied at least 25 points in four games this season, joining Feher (2004-05) and Shea (1988-89) as the only players to do so in the program's history. Junior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) was the only other Dolphin to reach double figures with 10 points, while adding eight rebounds (five offensive) and a career-high six steals. Despite only holding a 15-14 edge in turnovers, the Dolphins turned the 15 Assumption miscues into 23 points, while the Greyhounds only scored six points following Le Moyne's 14 turnovers.

The Greyhounds placed three starters in double figures, led by Ann Marie Idusuyi's 13 points. Caitlin Ackerman added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Allison Stoddard recorded 11 points and six assists.

The teams went back and forth over the opening 10 minutes of the contest as the lead changed sides eight times in the span, while the score was tied twice, the second of which came at 18-apiece. Six Dolphins accounted for Le Moyne's 18 points in the span, led by five points from senior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay), while the Greyhounds also had six scorers, led by five from Idusuyi.

After Kelly Conley tied the score at 18 with two free throws, the Dolphins tallied five straight points to take the largest lead of the opening half. Pucello hit a three-pointer and then Marple made a pair of foul shots with 7:55 remaining.

Assumption (10-5, 5-5 NE-10), which has dropped three games in a row and five of its last eight, closed to within one point on three occasions over the last 5:11 of the stanza, the last of which came with 1:44 to go, but the Dolphins took a 30-26 lead into the intermission as Marple drilled a three-pointer from the right wing with eight seconds left.

Assumption scored 10 of the first 14 points in the second half to take a two-point lead at the 16:37 mark. Ackerman hit three jumpers to pull the Greyhounds within two each time and then Stoddard made a lay-up to tie the score and Idusuyi followed with a lay-up for a 36-34 advantage.

The Dolphins responded with the next seven points to regain control of the game. Marple made two free throws to tie the score, Andrade had a put-back lay-up and then Marple nailed a three-pointer in the left corner for a 41-36 lead with 14:50 left.

Following a 6-2 spurt by the Greyhounds to get within 43-42 with 12:02 remaining, the Dolphins rattled off 10 of the next 13 points to take their largest lead of the game up to that point. Marple ignited the run with her three-pointer for her 1000th point, senior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) followed with a steal and fast-break lay-up for a six-point advantage. After Kelly Carey cut the margin in half with a three-pointer, Greer hit a three-pointer of her own before stealing the ball and feeding Andrade for a fast-break lay-up to force an Assumption timeout with 8:09 left.

After the teams split the game's next 14 points over four and one-half minutes, during which times the Greyhounds got within five points twice, Assumption scored four straight points and six of the next eight to pull within four with 2:04 left.

Following two empty possessions by each team over the next 50 seconds, Marple registered a conventional three-point play to kick-start a game-ending 7-0 run. Andrade extended the margin to 66-58 with a free throw and then senior forward Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) grabbed the missed second attempt and laid it back in for a 10-point margin. Andrade then finished off the game's scoring with a free throw with 13 seconds left.

Le Moyne (11-5, 5-4 NE-10), which snapped a nine-game losing skid to the Greyhounds and won at home against Assumption for the first time since a 78-71 victory on November 30, 2008, hits the road to take on Merrimack College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
