WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT, 65-58, AT MERRIMACK

North Andover, Mass. – Junior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) scored 20 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to its fourth straight victory, 65-58, over Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at Hammel Court. The win is only Le Moyne's second in 14 all-time meetings at Merrimack and is the first since the 2000-01 season.

Andrade scored 16 of her game-high point total in the opening half, while adding five rebounds and two assists. Senior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) recorded 10 of her 14 points in the second half, while classmate Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) was the third Dolphin in double digits with 11 points. Senior forward Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds and added eight points and a pair of steals.

Merrimack was led offensively by Chloe Rothman, who tallied 16 points, including nine in the first half, while adding three assists. Allison Wagner came off the bench to register 11 second-half points, while Tia Scott recorded 10 second-half points to go along with six rebounds (five offensive) and five steals.

After the Warriors took a 7-6 lead with 16:52 left in the first half on a lay-up by Aria Johnson and the teams followed with a scoreless stretch of four minutes, the Dolphins rattled off 12 of the next 13 points over 3:49 to take their first double-digit lead of the game. Andrade made a lay-up, Greer followed with a three-pointer, Marple made a jumper, senior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) buried a three-pointer from the top of the key and then Greer made a fast-break lay-up to force a Merrimack timeout.

Rothman made a three-pointer out of the timeout to snap a stretch of 8:13 without a field goal, but the Dolphins kept pushing with 13 of the next 16 points to open up a 31-14 lead with 1:15 left in the half. Andrade had the first five points and the last five points around a lay-up by Greer and a free throw by McMahon.

Following Rothman's third three-pointer of the half, Andrade made a lay-up to give the Dolphins a 33-17 lead at the intermission.

After Scott made a pair of lay-ups around a McMahon lay-up to start the second half, the Dolphins scored eight straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 43-21, with 16:13 left. Marple drained a three-pointer, Andrade had a put-back lay-up and then Marple registered a conventional three-point play to get into double figures for the 16th time in 17 games this season.

Merrimack responded with an 18-7 run over the next nine minutes to cut their deficit in half. Scott led the Warriors in the run with six points as six different players scored, while Stormee Van Belle tallied four points and Rothman posted a conventional three-point play.

Le Moyne used an 8-2 run over the next 2:13 to push its lead back to 16 with just under five minutes left. Junior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) tallied four of the points in the span, while McMahon and Greer each added two.

Merrimack got back within 11 on a pair of occasions over the next 80 seconds, but McMahon made a foul shot and Salzbrenner converted a pair to put the Dolphins back up 14 (63-49) with 2:24 to go.

The Warriors kept charging and scored seven straight points over 43 seconds to trim their deficit to seven with 1:32 remaining. Wagner started the streak with a three-pointer, Rothman made two free throws and then knocked down a pull-up jumper.

Following two empty possessions by each team, Marple made a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to push the margin back to nine. Van Belle converted a lay-up with two seconds left to deliver the final score.

Le Moyne (12-5, 6-4 NE-10), which has won four straight conference games for the first time since February 2008, returns to action on Wednesday at Saint Anselm College at 5:30 p.m.
