Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) recorded a double-double to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to its fifth straight win, 62-52, over Saint Anselm College on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Stoutenburgh Gym.
Andrade recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds (eight in the second half) for her team-best third double-double of the season, while adding a season-high four blocked shots, four steals and three assists. Senior forward
Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) tallied 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench after drilling all three of her attempts from three-point range. In the team's five-game win streak, Pucello is 16-of-22 from behind the three-point arc. Senior forward
Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as the Dolphins posted a 40-34 advantage on the boards.
Caitlyn Abela led all scorers in the game with 22 points, including 11 in each half, while grabbing nine rebounds and blocking a pair of shots. Candace Andrews tallied 12 points and dished out five assists (against eight turnovers) before fouling out in the final minute.
The teams traded runs over the opened eight and one-half minutes of the contest, resulting in the game's only two ties. Andrade scored the first four points of the game before three Hawks combined for the next five points. The Dolphins ran off five points of their own before Saint Anselm scored six of the next eight points to tie the game at 11-apiece.
Le Moyne (13-5, 7-4 NE-10), which has won five straight games for the first time since January 2002, rattled off 13 of the next 16 points, including eight in a row on the back end, to take its first 10-point lead of the game. Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) made three free throws with 6:59 left after being hit on a three-point attempt.
Saint Anselm closed out the half with 12 of the last 16 points to get within 28-26 at the intermission. Abela nailed two three-pointers around two free throws and two lay-ups from Raquel Johnson.
The teams traded the lead four times over the opening four minutes of the second half before the Dolphins took the lead for good. After Ali Glennon gave the Hawks a 31-30 lead with a lay-up at the 17:56 mark, Le Moyne ran off eight straight points and 13 of the next 15 over 4:44 to regain its double-digit lead. Senior forward
Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) had all eight points in the initial burst with a pair of three-pointers around a lay-up. Following two Saint Anselm free throws, junior guard
Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wisc./Sheboygan North) drained a three-pointer and McMahon followed with a lay-up for a 43-33 advantage with 11:16 remaining.
Over the next four minutes, the teams went back and forth before Brown converted two free throws to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the game, 53-41, with 7:17 to play.
The Hawks then embarked on an 11-4 run over the ensuing six minutes to get within five with 1:13 remaining. Andrews had six of the 11 points in the span, while Abela buried a three-pointer to make the score 57-52.
After Greer made one free throws, Andrade converted four foul shots in the last 57 seconds as the Dolphins scored the last five points of the game.
Le Moyne, which has won six straight meetings with the Hawks, returns home to face the other Northeast Division team from the Queen City, Southern New Hampshire University, on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
