Manchester, N.H. – Five players scored in double figures to lead Saint Anselm College to an 86-66 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Sophomore forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) led the Dolphins offensively in the loss with a career-high 20 points, 13 of which he scored in the second half. Junior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) was the only other Dolphin to score in double digits as he posted 18 points, including 14 in the first half, while grabbing a team-best six rebounds.
Harrison Taggart led the Hawks in the victory with a career-best 17 points, while adding five assists, four rebounds and a pair of blocks. Mark Schulze also posted a new career high with 15 points, while dishing out seven assists and pulling down six rebounds. All-conference selections Chris Santo and Roy Mabrey each tallied 14 points in 29 minutes of action, while Santo grabbed 11 rebounds and Mabrey posted four assists and three steals. Ryan Hartung contributed 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.
After Lovell gave the Dolphins a 5-2 lead with a three-pointer 85 seconds into the game, the Hawks rattled off 16 straight points over the next four and one-half minutes. Victor Joshua started the streak with a three-pointer, Santo followed with a conventional three-point play and then Taggart had a tip-in and consecutive three-pointers to give the Hawks an 18-5 lead at the 13:42 mark.
Following a timeout, the Dolphins scored nine of the next 12 points to trim their deficit to seven with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half. Lovell had two baskets, while freshman guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School), who made his second career start, converted a jumper and junior forward
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) registered a conventional three-point play.
Hartung followed with four points around a Mabrey jumper to push Saint Anselm's lead back to 13 with 8:11 to go.
After the teams traded points over the next five minutes, the Dolphins put together an 11-4 spurt over 2:14 to get within five with 24 seconds left in the half. Senior forward
Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) started the push with a lay-up and then Mahoney, Buczek and freshman guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) nailed three-pointers on consecutive possessions to make the score 41-36.
Santo converted a lay-up just before time ran out in the stanza to give the Hawks a 43-36 lead at the intermission.
After the Dolphins countered a Mabrey three-pointer with four points to close within six just 1:37 into the second half, Saint Anselm tallied 12 straight points from behind the three-point line to regain control of the game. Schulze ignited the run with a three-ball and then Taggart buried a pair around a trifecta from Mabrey.
Following Taggart's second three-pointer with 15:43 left, the teams traded points over the next five and one-half minutes with Saint Anselm's lead bouncing between 15 and 19 points.
Saint Anselm then used a 13-6 spurt over 3:27 to take its largest lead of the game, 82-59, with 6:14 left. Hartung nailed a pair of three-pointers around four points from Grant Mackay and a three-pointer from Joshua, while the Dolphins got four of their six points from Buczek.
The teams traded points over the next five minutes before freshman forward
Chandler Benson (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) scored three points in the last 33 seconds to deliver the final score.
Le Moyne (12-6, 6-5 NE-10), which has dropped three of its last four games, returns home to face Northeast Division-leading Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
