ROBERTS WESLEYAN USES LATE RUN TO DEFEAT WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, 79-76

Rochester, N.Y. – Lucy Covley recorded a double-double to lead Roberts Wesleyan College to a 79-76 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Voller Athletic Center.

Senior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) led the Dolphins in the setback with 19 points, 15 of which she scored in the second half, while adding eight rebounds and two assists. Senior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) scored a career-best 18 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Her previous career-best of 10 points came in the sixth game of her 73-game career, an 80-72 setback to New Haven on December 1, 2012. Sophomore forward Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) came off the bench to record a career-high 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Freshman guard Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Central Catholic) reached double-digits for the first time this season with 11 points.

Covley led four Redhawks in double figures with a game-high 22 points, while adding a game-best 12 rebounds. Brooke Fields and Samantha Courtney each scored 18 points, while Fields posted four assists and Courtney tallied nine rebounds and three assists. Necedah James added 12 points and four assists.

After Salzbrenner started the game's scoring with a three-pointer two minutes into the contest, the Redhawks registered 18 of the next 20 points to take an 18-5 lead at the end of the first period. Courtney tallied eight of the points, while five other players also scored in the stretch.

Roberts Wesleyan pushed its lead to 20-5 with a lay-up 39 seconds into the second period, but the Dolphins countered with 10 of the next 14 points to trim their deficit to nine with 4:33 left in the half. Webster had four of the points before Brown made a lay-up to make the score 24-15.

After the teams traded three-pointers, Fields connected on another three-pointer and then made a fast-break lay-up to give the Redhawks a 37-22 lead at halftime.

Roberts Wesleyan got a lay-up 18 seconds into the third period to take a game-high 17-point lead, but the Dolphins answered with a 20-6 run over 5:10 to get within one possession. Brown accounted for eight points in the streak, while Salzbrenner added five points.


The Redhawks pushed their lead back to seven points with 1:50 left, but Webster made a lay-up and Purcell nailed a three-pointer with five seconds left to get the Dolphins within 49-47 at the end of the third period.

Covley pushed Roberts Wesleyan's lead to five with a three-pointer 1:48 into the fourth period, but the Dolphins tallied seven of the next nine points to tie the score at 54-apiece with 7:15 to play. Salzbrenner registered a conventional three-point play, senior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) converted a lay-up and then Purcell tied the score with a lay-up.

Roberts Wesleyan regained control of the game with 10 straight points in just 83 seconds. James had a three-point play, Covley buried consecutive three-pointers and then made a free throw for a 64-54 lead with 5:31 left.

Le Moyne scored seven of the next nine points to trim its deficit in half, but Covley made two free throws and a three-pointer to push the margin back to nine with 2:46 to play.

After James made a free throw with 1:46 left to make the score 74-66, Salzbrenner and Andrade each made two foul shots with 50 seconds left to get Le Moyne within four. Four Roberts Wesleyan free throws around one by Brown extended the lead back to seven with 28 seconds to play.

Webster recorded a three-point play and then Brown converted a lay-up with seven seconds left off a steal by Webster to get Le Moyne within 78-76.

After Fields made a free throw with seven seconds left, the Dolphins were unable to put a shot on target before time ran out.

Le Moyne (1-4), which has dropped four straight games, plays its second straight non-conference game on Saturday at Daemen College at 2:00 p.m.
