Amherst, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's basketball team outscored Daemen College, 24-5, in the fourth period en route to recording a 74-58 win over the Wildcats in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View) led the Dolphins in the victory with 19 points and 13 rebounds (eight offensive) for her fourth double-double in six games, while adding four assists and two steals. Junior guard
Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) came off the bench to score 13 points, nine of which came in the second half, while grabbing five rebounds. Sophomore forward
Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) registered her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Leah McDonell and Taylor Heinold each recorded 16 points and three rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Sarah Saba was the third Wildcat in double digits with 12 points, while adding a team-best nine rebounds.
Daemen jumped out of the gates by scoring the first 10 points over the opening 2:17. Saba started the scoring with a lay-up, Heinold followed with a three-pointer and then McDonell scored five straight points to force a Le Moyne timeout.
Le Moyne responded with five straight points to cut its deficit in half. Freshman guard
Melanie Quijano (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Catholic) got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with a three-pointer and then Andrade made a put-back lay-up.
Following a Heinold three-pointer to give the Wildcats an eight-point lead, the Dolphins scored 12 of the last 17 points of the period to get within one point. Sophomore forward
Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) scored the first five points, sophomore guard
Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) followed with a three-pointer and then Webster made a pair of baskets.
After Daemen scored five of the first seven points of the second period to take a 23-19 lead with 7:36 left, Le Moyne scored five straight points and 16 of the next 23 points to take a 35-30 lead. Andrade had a free throw on each side of a three-pointer by freshman guard
Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central), Poitevien and Webster made lay-ups and then Leszyk buried a three-pointer for a 31-27 lead. Following a Heinold three-pointer, Demand and Andrade converted lay-ups.
Heinold and Demand traded free throws to close out the scoring in the first half as the Dolphins took a 37-32 lead into the intermission.
After the teams traded points over the opening 2:24 of the third period, which resulted in a 41-36 Le Moyne lead, Daemen rattled off eight straight points to take the lead. Saba made a free throw, Raeann Stilwell drained a three-pointer, McDonell converted a lay-up and then Somara Colon hit a jumper with 5:08 left for a 44-41 advantage.
Daemen extended its lead to 51-45 with 2:52 left by scoring seven points in 1:24 around two baskets by Demand. Saba scored the first three points and then Colon and McDonell followed with baskets.
Le Moyne tallied five of the last seven points of the period to get within three points after 30 minutes. Andrade (2) and Demand (1) combined for three free throws before Webster hit a jumper to make it 53-50.
The Dolphins scored the first 10 points of the fourth period to take control of the game. Andrade and Webster each scored four points and then senior forward
Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) knocked down a jump shot.
Stilwell got the Wildcats back within four with a three-pointer with 4:50 left, but that would be Daemen's final basket of the game.
Le Moyne put the game away with 14 of the last 16 points. Andrade started the run with a lay-up and classmate
Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) followed with a three-pointer off a feed from Andrade.
After Saba made two free throws with 2:06 left, Demand made four free throws around a free throw each from Brown and Andrade and another three-pointer by Salzbrenner.
Le Moyne (2-4), which snapped a four-game losing streak, returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at home against The College of Saint Rose at 5:00 p.m. The game is the 10th contest of the year in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the institutions and is worth one-half point. Le Moyne holds a 5-4 lead through the first nine sports.
