Erie, Pa. – Four players scored in double figures to lead Alderson Broaddus University to a 76-64 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday evening in the consolation game of the 32nd Annual Gary Miller Classic at Gannon University's Hammermill Center.
Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led the Dolphins offensively with a game-high 21 points, while adding a season-high six assists. With his ninth point of the game, Lovell became the 35th Dolphin to score at least 1100 career points. Junior guard
Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.) scored in double figures for the fifth time in six games with 16 points.
Thylas Perkins led the Battlers in the victory with 15 points and nine rebounds. Malcolm Tatum and Richard Lemon each tallied 14 points, while Tatum dished out seven assists and Lemon pulled down six rebounds and handed out four assists. Angelo Cugini added 13 points and six rebounds.
After the teams split the first eight points of the game, the Dolphins scored four straight points to take their first of four four-point leads. Their final four-point lead came at 15-11 with 14:30 left in the first half on a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy).
Alderson Broaddus responded with seven straight points and 14 of the next 16 points to take a 25-17 lead with 5:04 left. Tatum scored six of the points, including the last four, while Perkins and Dorrell Foster each buried three-pointers.
The Dolphins countered with 10 of the next 12 points to knot the score at 27-apiece with 2:31 remaining. Rolon made two free throws, Hyland followed with a three-pointer, Lovell hit a jumper and then senior forward
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) drilled a three-pointer in transition to force an Alderson Broaddus timeout.
The Battlers scored four straight points to regain the lead before Lovell got the Dolphins within 31-29 at halftime with a transition jumper at the buzzer.
After Perkins put the Battlers up 33-29 nine seconds into the second half, Le Moyne scored seven straight points to take its final lead of the game. Lovell made a lay-up, sophomore guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) followed with a fast-break lay-up to tie the score and then Lovell buried a three-pointer for the lead.
Alderson Broaddus answered with 12 consecutive points to take control of the game. Tatum started the run with two free throws, Cugini followed with a three-pointer for the lead, Imanol Artinano converted a put-back lay-up, Perkins hit a jumper in the paint and then Cugini capped the streak with another three-pointer to force a Le Moyne timeout.
Le Moyne got within five at 50-45 on six points from Lovell and three points from junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic), but Tatum made a fast-break lay-up and Sanar Shamdeen drilled a three-pointer to extend the lead to double digits for the Battlers.
After another Shamdeen three-pointer gave Alderson Broaddus a 58-48 lead with 7:22 to play, the Dolphins scored 11 of the next 15 points to cut their deficit to three. Hyland hit a jumper, freshman forward
Brandon Fischer (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) made his first two collegiate foul shots and then Rolon drained a three-pointer. Following a jumper by Perkins, Lovell scored four points in 22 seconds to get the Dolphins within 62-59 with 5:04 remaining.
Alderson Broaddus responded with 12 consecutive points over 3:48 to put the game away. Cugini started the streak with a lay-up, Lemon scored six straight points, Cugini made another lay-up and then Lemon connected on two foul shots with 40 seconds left for the last two points.
Rolon scored five points around two foul shots by Perkins to get the Dolphins within the final margin.
Le Moyne (2-4), which was swept in a tournament/classic for the first time in 34 appearances (1988-89 season), returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at home against The College of Saint Rose at 7:00 p.m. The game is the 11th contest of the year in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions and is worth one-half point. Le Moyne holds a 5-4 lead through the first nine sports.
