Garden City, N.Y. – James Thristino scored a goal and had an assist to lead third-seeded Adelphi University to a 2-0 win over sixth-seeded Le Moyne College on Tuesday evening in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Soccer Championship at Motamed Field.
The scoreless first half featured 11 total shots, eight of which were taken by Adelphi. The Panthers registered two of the three shots on goal in the stanza.
Adelphi broke through just under five minutes into the second half. Federico De Oliveira carried the ball into the left side of the penalty box before crossing the ball in front of the net. James Thristino slipped behind his defender and was able to slot the ball into the left side of the net at the 49:52 mark for his seventh goal of the season.
The Panthers doubled their lead in similar fashion at the 72:47 mark. Will Rezin carried the ball down the left side of the penalty box before crossing it into the middle of the penalty box. After a touch back by Thristino, Caelan Hueber scored his 10th goal of the season from eight yards out.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) registered five saves, including three in the second half, in the setback for the Dolphins. Spenser Powell, a junior making his third career appearance between the pipes, recorded four saves, including three in the second half to earn his second career victory. The Panthers registered a 15-9 advantage in shots, while each team took four corner kicks.
Le Moyne (12-5-1), which fell to the Panthers in the NE-10 first round for the third straight year, now awaits word on a berth in the NCAA Championships. Selections will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
