Garden City, N.Y. – The backcourt tandem of Michael Coffey and Anthony Libroia combined for 44 points to lead Adelphi University to an 83-76 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led four Dolphins in double figures with 20 points, while adding five rebounds and four assists. Junior guard
Tyquan Rolon (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Mohawk Valley C.C.) recorded 15 points and four rebounds, while sophomore forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) registered 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Sophomore forward
Zach Quattro (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points.
Coffey led the Panthers in the victory with 23 points, 12 of which he scored in the second half, while adding eight rebounds. Libroia finished the contest with 21 points, including 12 in the first half, while dishing out six assists and grabbing four rebounds. Ryan DeNicola pulled down a game-best 15 rebounds, including 11 in 16 first-half minutes, while scoring nine points.
After the teams split the first 10 points of the game, the Panthers rattled off 14 straight points over 3:35 to take control. Libroia recorded seven of the points, while Justin Jenkins scored five and Coffey made a lay-up.
The Dolphins responded with 13 of the next 18 points to trim their deficit to six with 10:59 left. Sophomore guard
Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) started the run with a three-pointer, Lovell followed with a three-point play, Quattro scored five straight points and then senior forward
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) made a tip-in to make the score 24-18.
After the teams split the next 14 points over 6:40, the Panthers pushed their lead back to 12 with an 8-2 run over 64 seconds. DeNicola made a tip-in and then Coffey nailed back-to-back three-pointers.
Le Moyne answered with 12 of the final 14 points of the half, including the last eight, to get within 41-39 at halftime. Lovell tallied six of the points, including the final two on a jumper with one second left, while Rolon had four and Quattro made a jumper.
After the teams alternated baskets to start the second half, the Dolphins ran off seven straight points to take their largest lead of the game. Lovell started the streak with a three-pointer from the right corner and then Kaigler scored four points.
Adelphi responded with eight straight points to take the lead back. Libroia recorded a conventional three-point play and then Jack Laffey scored five straight points.
Following two free throws by Quattro to get the Dolphins back within one with 11:47 left, the Panthers scored 13 of the next 16 points to take control of the game. Coffey had five of the points, while three others combined for eight points as the Panthers took a 66-55 lead with 6:09 to go.
Adelphi's lead bounced between seven and 10 points over the next 5:12 before Rolon nailed a three-pointer with 45 seconds left to get the Dolphins within five.
Libroia and Coffey each went 4-for-4 from the foul line over the last 43 seconds as the Panthers closed out the victory.
Le Moyne (3-5, 2-2 NE-10), which had its four-game winning streak against the Panthers snapped, returns to action at home next Saturday against American International College at 3:00 p.m.
