Manchester, N.H. – Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year Chris Santo scored 25 points to lead Saint Anselm College to an 84-73 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships quarterfinals at Stoutenburgh Gym.
The Dolphins, who finish the season with a 16-13 record, placed three players in double figures. All-conference junior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led the Dolphins with 21 points, 13 of which he scored in the second half, while adding three rebounds and three rebounds. By going the distance in the contest, Lovell finishes the season with 1092 minutes played, the second-most in a season by a Dolphin, trailing just
Nate Champion's 1132 from last year. Sophomore forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) tallied 19 points, including 14 in the first half, and nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Senior forward
Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) closed out his collegiate career with his third straight double-double with 13 points (9 in the second half) and 11 rebounds (9 in the second half).
Saint Anselm, which ended Le Moyne's season for the third time in six years, had four players score in double digits. Santo lead the way with 25 points, 15 of which he scored in the first half, while adding eight rebounds and three steals. Roy Mabrey hit six three-pointers en route to 22 points, while adding four assists. Mark Schulze tallied 14 points, three assists and three steals, while Victory Joshua recorded 10 points and five assists.
The teams opened the game by going back and forth over the first 18 minutes. The score was tied five times, the lead changed sides nine times and the margin was never greater than five.
After Le Moyne took a 34-32 lead on a lay-up by Buczek, Saint Anselm scored 11 of the half's last 12 points over the final 2:27 to take a 43-35 lead at the intermission. Schulze started the streak with a lay-up, Santo followed with a put-back lay-up and then stole the ball, which led to a fast-break lay-up by Ryan Hartung. Mabrey then buried a three-pointer with 47 seconds left for a 41-34 lead. After Lovell made a free throw with 30 seconds left, Santo hit a jumper at the buzzer after stealing the ball the second prior.
Le Moyne scored the first seven points of the second half to get within one with 17:42 remaining. Lovell started the run with a three-pointer and then hit jumper. Freshman guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) followed with a lay-up to get the Dolphin within 43-42.
After Santo and Romich traded lay-ups, the Hawks rattled off a 29-14 run to take a 74-59 advantage with 6:12 remaining. Mabrey and Santo each had eight points in the stretch, Schulze tallied seven and Hartung and Harrison Taggart each buried a three-pointer. Lovell and Romich each had four points in the span for the Dolphins, while junior forward
Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) nailed a three-pointer and Buczek and freshman guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) each had two points.
The Dolphins answered with nine of the next 11 points to get within eight with 2:12 left, but could not get any closer. Lovell had four of the points, Romich had three and Sangster had the other two with a jumper in the paint.
Following two points from Joshua and Hyland, Mabrey buried a three-pointer, Schulze converted a foul shot and then Joshua made two free throws with 31 seconds left to put the game away.
Buczek completed Le Moyne's scoring for the season with a conventional three-point play with 23 seconds to go.
