FIRST INNING DOES IN BASEBALL IN 11-5 LOSS AT CHESTNUT HILL

Philadelphia, Pa. – Chestnut Hill College scored seven runs in the first inning en route to an 11-5 win in six innings over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Father Judge High School's Ramp Athletic Field Complex. The game, scheduled for nine innings, was shortened to six innings due to inclement weather.

The Griffins tallied seven runs on just two hits and one Le Moyne error in the first inning for the only runs they would need. Left fielder Brendan Looby walked on six pitches to open the game and then took second on a wild pitch. After first baseman Patrick Campion reached on an infield single, right fielder Michael McLaughlin walked on four pitches to load the bases. Following a strikeout, designated hitter Unger and shortstop Preston Koehler drew consecutive walks to force in Looby and Campion. As third baseman Taylor Steen reached on a fielder's choice, McLaughlin scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. After another strikeout, second baseman Alec Craig drew the fifth walk of the inning to force in Unger. Looby followed with a double to right field to drive in Koehler, Steen and Craig with the final runs of the inning.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with one run on one hit. Sophomore pinch-hitter Tyler Schmitt (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) singled to the shortstop with one out and then moved to third following walks by junior shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and freshman designated hitter Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown). Senior center fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Schmitt.

Le Moyne added a run in the fifth without getting a hit. Freshman pinch-hitter Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) drew a walk on four pitches to open the inning and then took second on a wild pitch. After a groundout, junior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and redshirt sophomore right fielder Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) drew walks to load the bases. Schmitt was then issued a free pass on four pitches to force in Corapi.

Chestnut Hill regained its seven-run lead with two runs without getting a hit in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch-hitter Matthew Owens and Koehler walked to start the inning. Following an out, center fielder Dalton Cozart grounded out to knock in Owens. Koehler then raced home on a wild pitch.

The Dolphins got within four with three runs on one hit in the sixth inning. Following walks by Cox and Mathers to start the frame, junior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) tripled to right center to drive in Cox and Mathers. After another walk by Corapi, junior catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) recorded a sacrifice fly to center to plate Charbonneau.

The Griffins finished off the game's scoring with two runs on one hit in the sixth inning. Looby led off with a double to center and then took third on a wild pitch. Following walks by Campion and pinch-hitter Joseph Monaghan to load the bases, Looby scored on a wild pitch. After a walk by catcher Robert Slagle and an out at home, Monaghan scored on a wild pitch.

Redshirt junior Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) took the loss after giving up seven runs (two earned) in two-thirds of an inning. Dominic Raia earned the victory after tossing two hitless and scoreless innings, while striking out two batters.

Le Moyne (3-6) returns to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Molloy College at 3:00 p.m. at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y.
