Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Sophomore shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) registered seven hits, including hitting for the cycle, to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a pair of wins on its second day at the Fast Pitch Dreams Tournament. The Dolphins defeated Ursuline College, 10-2, in their first game of the day and Montreat College, 6-2, in their second game. The Dolphins were upended by Seton Hill University, 9-8, in their final game of the afternoon.
In the first game of the day, Ursuline got on the scoreboard first on one hit in the bottom of the second. Center fielder Sam Roberts doubled to center with one out, stole third and then scored on a ground out by first baseman Carly Hoffner.
Le Moyne took the lead in the top of the third with two runs on two hits. Junior first baseman
Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) led off with a double to right and moved to third on a bunt single by junior left fielder
Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield). As Reynolds stole second, Cawley raced home on a throwing error by the catch. Following a sacrifice bunt and a walk by Case, Reynolds scored on a ground out by junior right fielder
Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont).
The Dolphins added a run on two hits in the fourth inning. Senior catcher
Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) singled to left with one out, but was retired at second as junior designated player
Mackenzie Dreher (Hinckley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) reached on a fielder's choice. Cawley then doubled to center to knock in Dreher.
Le Moyne pushed its lead to 4-1 in the fifth as Case tripled to right field with one out and scored on a ground out by Trotta.
In the sixth, Le Moyne scored four times on four hits. Sophomore third baseman
Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) doubled to right field to open the inning and was replaced at second base by freshman pinch-runner
Tess Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee). Following a single to left by Capuano, Dreher singled to left to drive in Andrews. After an out and a walk by Reynolds to load the bases, freshman pinch-hitter
Rachelle Walters (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) singled to right field to plate Capuano and Dreher. Reynolds then scored as Case reached on a fielder's choice.
Ursuline got one run back in the bottom of the sixth. Shortstop Leah Leshnack reached on a bunt single with two outs and then took second on a wild pitch. Designated hitter/pitcher Brittany Humbel followed with a single to left to knock in Leshnack.
The Dolphins finished off the game's scoring with two runs on two hits in the seventh. Mascari led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder. Capuano followed with a double to drive in Mascari. After Capuano moved to third on a ground out, she scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Cawley.
Redshirt junior
Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) went the distance in the circle to earn her second win of the season, while striking out two batters and yielding two runs on five hits. Capuano registered three of Le Moyne's 11 hits, while Cawley and Mascari each added two hits. Gina Rosshirt took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits over five innings, while striking out three batters.
Against Montreat, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need on two hits and two errors in the second inning. Dreher reached on an error by the second baseman with one out and then moved to second on a single to center by sophomore catcher
Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster). Andrews then singled to right field and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder, which allowed Dreher to score.
Le Moyne added four runs on five hits in the third inning. Case singled to center field with one out and moved to third on a single to left by Trotta. Sophomore center fielder
Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) followed with a single to left to knock in Case. Cawley then singled to knock in Trotta and Riley. Two batters later, Bagley singled to the shortstop to plate Cawley.
The Dolphins completed the scoring in the contest with one run on two hits in the sixth inning. Senior pinch-hitter
Jillian Jacinth (West Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) singled to center to open the frame, but was retired at second as Walters reached on a fielder's choice. Junior second baseman
Meagan Malarkey (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott/Broome C.C.) then re-entered the game and stole second base. Case followed with a triple to center to knock in Malarkey.
Sophomore
Marisa DuVal (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) earned the win in her first career appearance in the circle with six strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, while scattering four hits. Case, Trotta, Bagley and Andrews each tallied two of Le Moyne's 11 hits in the victory. Amber Smith took the loss for Montreat after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits over three innings.
In their final game of the day, the Dolphins struck first with a run on one hit and one Seton Hill error in the bottom of the first inning. Case led off with a double to left field and came around to score as Trotta reached on a throwing error by the catcher.
Seton Hill took its first lead of the game with two runs on three hits in the second inning. Pitcher Christine Henderson and first baseman Kaitlyn Kutchman opened the frame with singles. After a sacrifice bunt, left fielder Paige Hertzog grounded out to drive in Henderson. Catcher Jacqui Palmer followed with a single to plate Kutchman.
Le Moyne regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second on three hits. Freshman pitcher
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) drew a walk to start the inning and moved to third on a one-out double to center by Cawley. After an out, Case tripled to left to drive in Eastman and Cawley. Trotta followed with another triple to score Case.
The Griffins answered with four runs in the third on five hits. Center fielder Victoria Stock led off with a single to left and advanced to third on a ground out and a single to center by shortstop Carlee Wickstrom. Henderson followed with a single to center to drive in Stock. After Kutchman walked to load the bases, Ashley Perillo singled to center to knock in Wickstrom and Henderson and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Hertzog followed with a single to right to plate Kutchman.
The Dolphins countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at six-apiece. Mascari launched a home run to left field to open the frame. Capuano followed with a single to center, took second on a sac bunt by Secreti and then scored on a single to center by Dreher.
Seton Hill took the lead back with one run in the fourth inning. Stock doubled to lead off the frame, took third on a ground out and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wickstrom.
The Griffins pushed their lead to 8-6 with a run in the sixth on three hits. With two outs, Stock singled to left field and advanced to third on a double to left by right fielder Caitlin Tobin. Wickstrom then singled to left to drive in Stock.
Le Moyne tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on three hits. Case cut Le Moyne's deficit in half with a one-out solo home run, the first of her career. After Trotta tripled to center field, Riley singled to center to knock in Trotta with the tying run.
Seton Hill took the lead back with a run on one hit in the seventh. Kutchman led off with a double to left and was replaced by pinch-runner Erika Arriola. After moving to third on a ground out, Arriola scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Hertzog.
The Dolphins loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not plate the tying run.
Secreti suffered the loss after yielding three runs on six hits over four and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen. Case hit for the cycle to account for four of Le Moyne's 15 hits, while driving in three runs and scoring three runs. She is the first Dolphin to hit for the cycle in over 10 seasons. Trotta, Riley, Dreher and Reynolds each recorded two hits. Henderson earned the win after striking out nine batters, while allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 15 hits over seven innings.
Le Moyne (4-1), which won its first four games for the first time since the 2003 season, concludes its trip to Myrtle Beach on Friday against Ohio Valley University at 11:00 a.m.
