West Haven, Conn. – Junior attackers
Erica Geremia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/SUNY Cortland) and
Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) combined for 15 points to lead the fifth-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to an 18-10 victory over fourth-ranked University of New Haven on Thursday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Kayo Field.
The Chargers, who rallied from a 6-2 halftime deficit last year to defeat the Dolphins 11-10, got on the scoreboard just 12 seconds into the game as Kathryn Campbell won the opening draw and raced up field to net her 12th goal of the season.
Le Moyne responded with six straight goals, the first three of which freshman midfielder
Abbie McEntee (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) had a hand in. She fed Monnat at the 27:56 mark to even the score at one apiece and then found senior midfielder
Laura Hoffman (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) 100 seconds later to put the Dolphins in front. Following seven minutes of scoreless action, McEntee registered her first career goal after taking a pass from sophomore midfielder
Molly McGuane (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus). Monnat tallied her second goal of the day with 14:28 left for a 4-1 lead, while Geremia converted a free-position shot 1:46 later for her 16th goal of the campaign. Redshirt freshman midfielder
Nicole Easterly (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) capped the streak by finishing off a feed from Monnat with 11:32 left in the half.
Courtney Ackland registered an unassisted goal with 10:39 left to make it a 6-2 game, but the Dolphins responded with four goals over 5:11. Monnat scored the first of the run at the 9:50 mark and then fed senior attacker
Julia Suriani (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca East) 50 seconds later for her 13th goal of the year. Geremia put the Dolphins up 9-2 with 5:36 to go and then Monnat got her team into double digits with an unassisted marker with 4:39 left.
Corinne Fisher scored with 31 seconds left in the half to get the Chargers within 10-3 at halftime.
As she did in the first half, Campbell won the opening draw of the second half and scored 12 seconds later to pull her team within 10-4.
The Dolphins countered with another long run (6-0 over 7:43) to blow the game open. Monnat scored with 28:22 remaining off a pass from Geremia, who then found the back of the net 1:18 later after taking a pass from Suriani. Less than three and one-half minutes later, Suriani gave the Dolphins a 13-4 lead with her second goal of the afternoon.
Geremia recorded assists on the next three goals over a span of 2:14. She found Hoffman at the 22:53 mark, Suriani 1:16 later and then McEntee with 20:39 left in the contest for a 16-4 advantage. Her assist to McEntee gave her 17 on the season, which leads the Northeast-10.
New Haven, which is the third straight team ranked fourth in the IWLCA poll to lose (LIU Post, Le Moyne), scored three times over a stretch of 6:55 to trim its deficit to single digits. Ackland scored off a pass from Caitlin O'Brien with 18:27 left and Maya Szymanski with 13:38 remaining to make the score 16-6. Fisher then scored her second goal of the game 2:06 later.
Following five minutes of scoreless play, the Dolphins scored a pair of goals within 89 seconds to regain their double-digit lead. Geremia tallied her 19th goal of the season with 6:30 left off a pass from sophomore midfielder
Amari Pollard (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), who followed with her 13th goal of the campaign with 5:01 to go off a feed from Suriani.
New Haven got goals from three different players over the last 3:51 to deliver the final margin. Campbell scored an unassisted goal with 3:51 left to start the run. Szymanski scored off a feed from Nicole Belanger with 41 seconds to play and O'Brien followed with a free-position goal 11 seconds later.
Senior goalkeeper
Molly Marbut (Edgewater, Md./South River) registered 10 saves (against seven goals) over the first 54:59 to earn her 26th career victory, which moves her into third on the program's all-time wins list. Alyssa Gianotti, who rotated with Marissa McDermott between the pipes, took the loss for the Chargers after allowing 10 goals in 34:38 of action, while making just one save.
Le Moyne (5-1, 2-0 NE-10), which beat a higher-ranked opponent for the second time in 12 days after going 1-5 in its first six such games over the previous four seasons, returns home to face Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for 11:00 a.m., but was moved back an hour due to expected inclement weather Sunday morning.
