Laura Hoffman (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) and
Julia Suriani (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca East) each scored five goals to lead the fifth-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team in an 18-5 win over Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
In addition to her five goals, which tied a career-high, Suriani dished out three assists for a career-best eight points. Hoffman's five goals, all of which she scored in the first half, established a new career high. Junior attackers
Erica Geremia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/SUNY Cortland) and
Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each tallied seven points. Geremia had four goals and three assists, while Monnat had one goal and a career-high six assists.
Following an empty possession by each team, the teams exchanged goals over a stretch of 3:34. The Dolphins opened the game's scoring at the 26:22 mark as Suriani finished off a feed from Monnat. The Penmen answered back 24 seconds later as Emily King netted her team-best 10th goal of the season. Hoffman continued the see-saw by finishing off a feed from Suriani with 24:13 left after Geremia caused a turnover. Alexa Allen knotted the score for the second and final time by converting a free-position shot with 22:48 left.
Le Moyne tallied the next six goals of the game to take control. Suriani gave the Dolphins the lead for good with her 17th goal of the season with 20:31 left after receiving a pass from sophomore midfielder
Molly McGuane (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus). After drawing a charge and then clearing the ball, sophomore midfielder
Amari Pollard (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) sent a pass to Monnat, who returned the ball to Pollard for her 14th goal of the season with 18:08 left. Hoffman scored the next two goals, 6:14 apart, off passes from Suriani and Monnat. Geremia got into the scoring column by converting a free-position shot from the left side with 6:35 left. Hoffman capped the run with her fourth goal of the half after taking a pass from Monnat with 4:44 remaining.
The teams traded goals over the final 99 seconds of the half as the Dolphins took a 10-4 lead into the intermission. Allen snapped her team's scoring drought of 21:09 by converting another free-position shot with 1:39 remaining. Just 45 seconds later, Geremia fed Hoffman for her 12th goal of the campaign. Following a Le Moyne turnover, Lindsay Bucknam registered an unassisted goal with 28 seconds left, while Pollard closed out the scoring in the half with 10.5 seconds left after collecting a pass from Suriani.
The Dolphins blew the game open with the first seven goals of the second half. Suriani found the back of the net off passes from Geremia at the 29:11 and 28:03 marks for a 12-4 lead. Following almost five minutes of scoreless play, Pollard and Geremia scored 18 seconds apart, with Geremia's goal at 23:06 being assisted by Monnat. Just over three minutes later, Suriani tallied an unassisted goal after a failed clear by the Penmen. After eight scoreless minutes, Geremia scored in front of the goal in an extra-man situation off a pass from Monnat, who then picked up her first goal of the game 2:11 later at the 9:43 mark.
After Courtney Nivala got the Penmen on the scoreboard in the second half at the 6:58 mark, Geremia ended the game's scoring with an unassisted goal with 2:36 remaining.
Senior goalkeeper
Molly Marbut (Edgewater, Md./South River) registered 11 saves (against five goals) over 53:02 between the pipes to earn her sixth victory of the season. Nicole Kennedy made nine saves in the loss for the Penmen. Le Moyne posted a 15-10 advantage in draw controls and a 26-21 edge in ground balls.
Le Moyne (6-1, 3-0 NE-10), which has scored at least 17 goals in three straight games, returns to action on Wednesday against Southern Connecticut State University at 3:00 p.m.
