BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH SHIPPENSBURG, 1-2, 11-3

Bel Air, Md. – Junior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) had four hits and scored four runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 11-3 victory over Shippensburg University in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday at Harford Community College's Harford Field. The Raiders rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh in the first game and won the game in eight innings, 2-1.

The Dolphins opened the scoring in game two with one run on two hits. Charbonneau singled through the right side with one out, moved to second on a ground out and then came around to score on single to center by junior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool).

Shippensburg evened the score in the bottom of the first on two hits. Shortstop Mike Marcinko led off with a single to right field, stole second and then scored on a single up the middle by third baseman Ryan McMillen.

The Raiders took the lead with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. Left fielder Grant Hoover opened the frame with a single up the middle, stole second and then scored on a double by first baseman Dalton Hoiles. Following two ground outs and a walk by Marcinko, Hoiles scored on a passed ball as McMillen walked.

Le Moyne took the lead back with three runs in the third on five hits. Sophomore center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) and Charbonneau opened the inning with singles to the right side. Junior designated hitter/catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) followed with a single to center to knock in DiNorcia. Wright then singled up the middle to drive in Charbonneau with the tying run. After a double play, junior shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled to the second baseman to plate West.

The Dolphins added three runs on four hits in the fourth. With two outs in the inning, DiNorcia singled to the second baseman. Charbonneau followed with a triple to left center to plate DiNorcia, while West then singled to knock in Charbonneau. Wright then doubled to left center to score West.

Le Moyne scored three more runs in the fifth on four hits. Senior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) led off with a single up the middle and then took second on a two-out single through the right side by DiNorcia. Charbonneau then singled down the right field line to plate Nagelsmith. After a walk by West and a Shippensburg pitching change, Wright drew a walk to force in DiNorcia. Freshman left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) followed with a single to the shortstop to drive in Charbonneau with Le Moyne's 10th run of the game.

The Dolphins finished off the scoring in the game with one run on one Shippensburg error in the sixth inning. Sophomore right fielder Austin Bouse (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) drew a walk with one out and then advanced to third on an error by the pitcher. DiNorcia then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in Bouse.

Sophomore righty Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) earned his first win of the season after striking out eight batters over six innings, while yielding three runs (two earned) on seven hits. In addition to Charbonneau recording four hits, DiNorcia and Wright each had three hits, while DiNorcia scored three runs and Wright drove in four. West and Nagelsmith each posted two hits, while West had two RBI and two runs scored. Rich Michaud took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits over three innings. Marcinko and Hoiles each had two of Shippensburg's eight hits.

After three scoreless innings to start the first game, the Dolphins got on the board first with one run on one hit and a Shippensburg error. Pittman reached on an error by the shortstop to start the frame and then took second on a single to right by Swetman. After a sac bunt by Bouse, Nagelsmith grounded out to drive in Pittman.

Shippensburg avoided defeat by tying the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Second baseman Nick Spangler doubled to right center to open the frame and was replaced at second by pinch-runner Levi Varner. After a pair of outs around a Le Moyne pitching change, Varner scored on a wild pitch as first baseman Jimmy Spanos walked.

After the Dolphins failed to score in the top of the eighth after having their first two runners reach base, the Raiders won the game in the bottom of the inning. Following a leadoff double to right field by catcher Jake Kennedy, right fielder Austin Allison singled down the right field line to plate Kennedy.

Senior righty Conor Nolan (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning, while also allowing an inherited base-runner to score. Senior southpaw Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) struck out six over six and one-third innings, while yielding one run on seven hits. Mark Curtis earned the win out of the bullpen after getting the final two outs of the eighth inning.

Le Moyne (3-5), which snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory in game two, returns to action on Tuesday against Chestnut Hill College at Father Judge High School's Ramp Athletic Field Complex at 6:30 p.m.
