BASEBALL DEFEATS SAINT ROSE, 1-0, IN 12 INNINGS TO CLINCH “UPSTATE CHALLENGE”

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) drove in the game's only run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Le Moyne College baseball team a 1-0 victory over The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Dick Rockwell Field.

With the victory, the Dolphins clinch the baseball point in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions and in doing so retain the trophy for the second straight year.

The Golden Knights were the first team to get a base runner to third base, but redshirt junior righty Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) was able to induce a fly out to end the third inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Dolphins advanced runners to second and third with two outs, but Saint Rose starter Phillip Zdanowski induced a fly out to center for the third out.

Left fielder Nick Venier led off the fourth with a double to right center and advanced to second on a groundout, but was thrown out at home on a groundout.

It took until the bottom of the seventh for another runner to get to third, but Zdanowski recorded a strikeout on five pitches to end his outing.

After Venier was stranded at second in the top of the 11th following a two-out double to right center, sophomore center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) singled to right field in the bottom of the inning and then stole second and third base. However, he was left stranded at third on a groundout.

In the bottom of the 12th, redshirt sophomore designated hitter Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) led off with a single to left field and then stole second base. After taking third on a fly out to left field, Martin raced home on a line drive sacrifice fly to center by West for the game-winning run.

Senior righty Conor Nolan (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) earned his first win of the season after tossing four and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen, while striking out three and allowing just two hits. Place struck out five batters over seven and one-third innings, while yielding just four hits. Chris Gould took the loss out of the bullpen for the Golden Knights after giving up the one run on four hits over four and two-thirds innings, while striking out three. Zdanowski struck out nine over his seven innings on the mound, while allowing three hits.

Le Moyne (11-13, 4-4 NE-10, 4-4 SW), which has won three straight games, travels to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
